Editorial Review:
From Amazon.com: Like many progressive-rock groups from King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and Yes to Genesis, Rush, and Queensryche, Dream Theater has followed its own musical and artistic agenda, trends and hipness be damned. That single-mindedness is borne out on Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York, a full-length concert video shot at Roseland Ballroom in New York City in August 2000; it was the final show on the group's tour supporting its release Scenes from a Memory. With its intricate rhythms and complex song structures, Dream Theater's music is serious and somber to a fault; when gospel singer Theresa Thomason and a backing chorus are brought on for a few numbers, the effect is strangely soothing, as if a layer of humanity smothers the impeccable craftsmanship. The video is decked out in visuals of a mostly silly sort, often literally spelling out the album's narrative (or what passes for it), including reenactments and a portentous narrator. It's all cleverly put together (drummer Mike Portnoy gets director credit), and Kevin Shirley's audio mixing presents the music with clarity and undeniable power. Fans of Dream Theater won't need to be told to snap this up; those unconvinced, however, are not likely to become converts. --Kevin Filipski

Like other reviews here, I had to take away a star for the cheesy effects. The musicianship and sound quality is great though. I hope they haven't made the same mistake with their forthcoming DVD.

This was a major disappointment. This has to be the most amaturistic pile of steaming dung I've ever seen. I have lost all respect for DT after veiwing just 10 minutes of this DVD....
The whole set up is laughable. Their are about maybe 500 fans, and their is no stage scenery at all. It looks like it was filmed in someone's warehouse. The muscianship is solid, but not that impressive IMO. Everyone here raves about how great these guys are live, but there really isn't anything here to convince me these guys are for real. It's just plain cheesy.
I expected much much more than this. A big crowd, and big stage, and a big sound. I got none of the above. It's weak and very amaturistic for a band that's been around as long as ... Read More:

As a guitar player, I ordered this DVD for my son who is drummer. I decided to listen to it. What can I say. Petrucci, Portnoy, singer,,, keyboard.. are a perfect match. Singer adds a lot of punch to the song. Music is tight and high energy. One of the best DVD's I have heard so far. Worth every penny. Portnoy...what can you say !!! He ,along with the bass player drive like a transmission on a car. Superb. Hope to but another DVD soon. On a scale 1-10.... I give 15-18... way over the scale.

This is the very DVD that helped me become such a huge Dream Theater fan. This is a good way to start out if you want to get into Dream Theater, because this is not for die-hard fans only. When the concert starts out, your interested right away, and you really want to watch the rest of it. Songs like "Overture 1928", "Fatal Tragedy", and "Spirit Carries On" are great songs with intricate song structures, well put together, and if you really like guitar solos then watch the John and Teresa solo spot. Another great thing about this DVD is the deleted scenes, "Learning to Live" and "Change of Seasons" are amazing, don't forget to watch them and the others too. Once you have watched the whole thing ... Read More:
