I am APPALLED by the fact that this book made it to the New York Times bestseller list and, apparently, will be made into a movie with....Julia Roberts (is this true?)
What does this tell us about North American culture and values??? Why should such a shallow piece of work written by such a self-absorbed narcissistic writer receive such fame and accolades? I am truly mystified. This book was all about HERSELF. Poor little me who received an ENORMOUS advance to write this book before she even left the States. Who whined and felt sorry for herself while in Italy, can you imagine??? She had no interest in visiting the fabulous museums, art galleries, churches, etc. but rather spend hundreds of Euros buying lingerie and eating ... Read More:

A friend's interest in Gilbert spurned me to read this short story collection, which I found very enjoyable. Gilbert has a way of creating a very vivid scene and situation, so as to wrap your interest around the characters promptly. Then, naughty as it is, she ends her stories almost always leaving you to wonder how everything will play out. It's more that she's giving you a glimpse into another world, rather than relating a brief story from beginning to end.

The Last American Man is a powerful book by Elizabeth Gilbert (of "Eat, Pray, Love" fame, which is also great book). She profiles Eustace Conway a man who believes that Americans are completely disconnected from nature and rely on material objects for happiness. Gilbert does not write Eustace Conway as a saint, however introduces his ideas and way of life to her readers. As an author Gilbert is honest, and witty. As a subject Conway is fascinating, and multilayered. I recommend this book to everyone. On a personal note I found Conway's message to be true and well needed. I changed several aspects of my lifestyle after reading about Eustace Conway's life in nature. Great book.

This book is a perfect solution for those writers in need of something to write about.
Caroline Sharp wrote this book after not writing for a significant period of time. She was searching for inspiration and invented her own. With this book she gives suggestions for various exercises and writing techniques. The book is meant to be done one chapter after another growing as you progress but some of the chapters are tedious and actually stopped me from writing, like the chapter on outlines (you have to write something in order to have something to outline!). I have found that skipping around works better for me only because some days are less patient than others.
For those of you serious writers looking for new techniques and new ideas this is a wonderful book ... Read More:

How can anyone give 5 stars to this book? It started well enough, but midway through the book I had lost interest, and worse, I began to really dislike Ruth. Ms Gilbert has the potential to be a good writer, but this is not a good book.
