This is an excellent review of the processes that regulate fat and carbohydrate metabolism. There is a clear explanation of why low carbohydrate diets work, and why low fat diets do not.

As an interesting side line, the book offers a modern example of "opinions masquerading as science" (in this case--a low fat, reduced calorie diet is the key to loosing weight).

At times, it is a hard to keep track of all of the studies cited, but in the end I think it is very compelling.

One year ago, I purchased this book out of pure desperation. I got a real scare when my Aunt died suddenly from complications of Binge Eating Disorder.I had the same problem and was going downhill fast. This book saved me from trying and failing at yet another diet. No matter how "healthy" the diets were that I've tried to control my binge-eating and resulting obesity, nothing worked. Not only did they not work, they were making me sicker both physically and emotionally. I'm a lifetime member of Weight Watchers and only way I every got to my "goal" weight was by starving more than bingeing.

This book is refreshing, well written and easy to read - it is full of sound common sense (something often lacking these days!) It stands on its own or can be read as a useful adjunct to Babette's earlier excellent book on the psychophysiology of trauma. Babette's wisdom, style and honesty around the many different approaches and tools for working with trauma are covered extensively and most usefully as fascinating case studies. I especially appreciated the chapter on learning from our mistakes and failures and the surprising fact that clients respect honest ignorance and they often don't get enough of it in the therapeutic encounter. Adaptability is the key word here..that is adapting to the unique needs of each client.

Eating alive II: Find the missing piece to the health puzzle

This and Dr. Matsen's first Eating Alive book (see www.eatingalive.com) are two of the most important books I have read in my life. I read the first book in one sitting at the book store, and found it as if lead by an unseen force (I felt guided to go to the bookstore, rode my bike there, and once inside the store, went straight up the escalators, to the natural health bookshelf, and BAM! my eyes hit Eating Alive and I just KNEW I had found exactly what I needed and I bought the book after spending 3 hours in the bookstore reading it from cover to cover and feeling like I had found the secret of the universe).
