Well, I've got news for you. Listen to this cd and you'll quickly realize that you are. Surprised? Angèle Dubeau and La Pieta are doing pure magic. No one can stay indifferent to their musical talents.
Try it, you'll do what I did. You'll rush to buy the other cds and wonder how can they keep producing such wonderful pieces of art...

I bought this CD about four years ago, and I had to sell it to pay off a debt. I listened to it some before I sold it, but then relistened to it later on record at a university I attended as a music student. The amazing performances of Fischer-Dieskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf are not to be missed. Neither is the superb, expressive conducting of George Szell.
The CD is amazing. Fischer-Dieskau's rendition of "Revelge" is most impressive and leaves a powerful impression on the listener. He sings mournfully at times, and he also sings with ferocity and cynicism at times as well, his voice with its rich, golden tone. The orchestra plays with razor-sharp edges and precision for a most chilling effect. One can almost see ... Read More:

I don't think I've ever underestimated a piece of music quite as much as I did the Third Symphony. Having never heard anything by Norgard before, ... I ordered it from Amazon and when it arrived I put it on the trusty CD player and sat at attention to try to get into it via its formal attributes. That's how I often first listen to a new piece of music: I try to understand what the composer is doing formally, to hear how it's constructed, so to speak. Well, it went right over my head. I was puzzled, frustrated, even a little angry. In fact, ... I couldn't hear the structure, even after reading the booklet notes.
But I persisted by relaxing into the music - you know what I mean, just sitting back and letting it wash over me, listening with half ... Read More:

I cannot believe that David White and the so-called "music fan" are listening to the same CD the rest of us are! This recording is what made a Martha Argerich fan out of me. Her playing throughout this collection is just spell-binding and thoroughly amazing. Argerich has recorded the Prokofiev 3rd twice already, and a third recording is reported to be ready for release. Each of them are as different from the others as can be. The later one, with Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony, is both more austere and more poetic than this one, but here we have the young Argerich, full of the fire, brio and self-confident daring and risk-taking which made her reputation. Few other pianists would attempt to take the outer movements ... Read More:

The recent trend toward classical boxed sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.
As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances ... Read More:

If I were the recording engineer on this album, I would consider my job very well done...provided you had required me to place the mic's in another room down the hall for some reason. There is a critical mic distance beyond which you may not go, where the early reflections off the walls start to dominate the sound and this recording has clearly exceeded that.
This doesn't mean the album is worthless, it's just more suitable for backgroud music, and will disappoint if what you wanted was to sit and listen attentively to a fine Schubert performance...it will be like you've been locked out of the concert hall and have to listen from the foyer.
