I received this DVD as a gift & loved it. The characters were an absolute delight to watch. I enjoyed reading the book too but when words can come off a page & be seen on screen like this adaptation is, it's simply: any viewers delight!

The Paris Opera House is being sold to a couple of junk... oops scrap metal dealers. They inherit along with the opera and Opera Company but also an unwanted guest. Yes it is the Opera Ghost or Phantom. The ghost falls in love with a voice and before the story of a love triangle is over we see that genius has turned to madness.
Loosely base on a story written by Gaston Leroux in 1911 "LE Fantôme de l'Opéra" (with many improvements) and more than 10 movie adaptations, "Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera" is brought to film with only scenes and sights and full orchestral music at can only bee seen and heard on film (best in Blu-ray).
As with many movie adoptions this film pails compared to the famous stage productions. ... Read More:

"Charlotte Gray" takes place during the second World War.Charlotte
becomes a courier in France,to help the war effort.but she has her own
reasons for joining.being a courier is a dangerous job and most do not
survive.the movie,while not depressing,is certainly sad at times.it is
quite compelling and well written, and very well acted.Cate Blanchett is
an extraordinary actress.it's hard to take your eyes.she is very
beautiful, but also talented beyond belief.there are some other great
actors in the movie as well.this is one of the better war time movies
out there.i say war time because, although the movie takes place during
the second World War,we don't see a lot of the war action.we do,
however, get to see ... Read More:

I have enjoyed East of Eden several times over a time span of some forty years; first in black and white on a small TV and later in colour but still in small screen format. So I looked very much forward to the new DVD release in its original format. The DVD package is certainly handsome with many welcome bonuses. Of particular interest is a short screen test segment featuring the two brothers in an intense dramatic confrontation. This revived memories of my first viewing of this classic and made me realize that the nature of this film would have been more suited to the 4:3, black and white format of previous Kazan helmed masterpieces such as A Street Car Named Desire and On the Waterfront. Kazan was not the only great director to experience teething problems with the recently ... Read More:

I was forced to read this book in English 201 (Sophomore College Class) and HATED it! I had to write a paper too, I got an A but only because I told the TRUTH of this book! The main character who calls himself Tommy Wilhelm is immature, unthinking and incredibly selfish. He's addicted to pain-killer medication, never washes his hands and is balding, fat and separated from his wife. We find out at the beginning of the book that Tommy is living in an old-folks retirement home in New York City even though he is only in his 40's. Tommy just lost his job at a children's furniture factory. His wife and son live in New York but he won't live with them. Tommy is down to his last few hundred dollars and has foolishly invested them in the stock market on the advice of Dr. Tamkin, a lying, cheating, vulture-like ... Read More:

His reaction surprised me because he tends to be a bit leery of historical-romance based material. However, I really think he liked the pirate, the pirate ship, the coast of Cornwall, the war, the smuggling and that kind of thing. I liked the pirate too. He's the 36 year old son of French actor Alain Delon so it was hard to go wrong with him as a French pirate. However, the story itself really didn't work well for me, in part because the ending was changed from the book's ending. However, it was an evening's entertainment and no expense had been spared in bringing this authentically to the screen. My husband would probably give it 4 stars and he liked the woman too. So if you want to watch a historical romance on your video/dvd system that won't send your husband scurrying out of the room, this one is it.
