Kind Of Blue (Remst)

by: Miles Davis

April 22, 1997
I can not say I know anything about Jazz music, although I always loved it due to my parents passion for it, hence I decided to erase my ignorance and start to educate myself about it. So I hinted on this album during the holiday season and ended up getting this as part of my Christmas gift from my father. I wanted this album due to Miles Davis name only. And I was spellbound by it; it's really a breathtaking peace of music. On one hand I was delighted and on the other hand I was upset!! Delighted because I got the chance to listen to this phenomenon, and upset because since I'm going to start my Jazz library I know that anything I listen to after "Kind of Blue" will pale and fade in comparison but I'm sure that the people that I know will also ... Kind Of Blue (50th Ann. Dlx )

by: Miles Davis

September 30, 2008
I have been waiting with great anticipation for the release of this set. Sony has done a very fine job of the book, the photographs, the CD and the poster. The LP is pressed in clear blue plastic and the mastering is very good. But the pressing is atrociously bad and noisy. Rather shoddy for the price if you compare it with the Blue Note 45 RPM issues by Music Matters. The surface has bubbles that produce distortions and clicks. A lot of collectors will be after the LP rather than the CD and Sony should have done a better job. What a shame!
Amazon.ca has been great in replacing my first set which I mailed back, with another in a matter of days, but the second set has arrive with a gouge in the slipcase and the same problem with the LP. I was ... Read More:

Birth Of The Cool

by: Miles Davis

January 23, 2001
The music on this CD was recorded in 1949/50, but acquired its famous album title only retrospectively, in 1957. As a jazz term, 'cool' means something more specific than the vague, all-purpose adjective-noun it has since become. It came to particular prominence in the 1950s to describe a more cerebral, less impassioned way of playing jazz. It's generally supposed that these sessions were part of the inspiration for the 'cool school' of jazz.which flourished especially on the West Coast in the 1950s. That's possibly the main reason for the historical importance of the 'Birth of the Cool' sessions and the album may therefore be of more appeal to those interested in the historical development of jazz than to listeners who merely enjoy Miles's own playing. ... Bitches Brew (Remst)

OK, I don't know much about jazz - I kinda get lost after dave Brubeck - but I gave this a go because I read that it was an influence on Radioheads OK Computer, one of my favourite rock albums.

But sorry, I just don't get it. I'm sure all these guys are very good musicians, but it's all just random noise to me. I'm sure it's my fault. Can anyone give me any clues what I'm doing wrong?

In A Silent Way

by: Miles Davis

September 10, 2002
Not much happens on this album, no raging solos, no instantly memorizable melodies, no thunderous or mind blowing drumming. So why 5 stars? Because this album has something about it, an ineffable atmosphere of calm beauty that is joyful, trancendant and yet peaceful. Its like a cooling summer rain punctuated by occasional thunder in the distance. Its pastoral, yet electric. "In A Silent Way" is considered Miles first fusion album and the first in which he explored rock rhythms (that's debatable). Its also ironically one of his most tranquil and beautiful. An ambient masterpiece.

Porgy And Bess

by: Miles Davis, Gil Evans

April 22, 1997
Of the handful of albums Miles Davis made with the composer/arranger Gil Evans, Porgy and Bess may or may not be the best, but it's in a class of its own. The music of Gershwin's groundbreaking folk-jazz opera inspired Evans to some of his most imaginative scoring, drawing a rich tapestry of sounds and effects from a jazz orchestra which, with the more traditional big band instrumentation, blends the additional colouring of tuba, French horns and flutes. On several of the tracks the orchestrations seem to take precedence over Miles's solos, and some of the material (like "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess") lends itself more to "interpretation" than to jazz improvisation as such. So it's an album that will appeal most to those listeners who are as interested in Evans's work as in that of Miles ... Read More:

The Essential Miles Davis (Rm) (2CD)

Miles Davis is one talented trumpet player. The tones and inflections that this legend displays in his playing style are quite unique not too mention stylish.

As good as Miles' playing is, way too many of the jams going off the deep end. Was it necessary to stretch My Funny Valentine into a fourteen minute jam fest. Its a short vocal mood piece with a distinctive melody. In the hands of Myles Davis, the melody has all but evaporated. Walkin' is another tune that overstays its welcome. The Voo Doo Jam is pretty creative the way the tension builds between Myles and his bandmates.

The last few songs on the second disc are pretty distinctive. Jean Pierre certainly sets a mood, while Time After Time is focused yet pretty. Portia utilizes modern dynamics quite well.
