Seeing Basia live at the Calgary Folk Fest where she went down a storm ( working the stage on her own and with the Great Lake Swimmers ) was great, she has already started adapting her songs from the album, the standout tracks being In the Night and I was a Daughter.

Her vocal has more depth and complexity to it than most of the other female singers around and this is what sets her apart.

It's hard to improve on Brent DiCrescenzo's original review of this album, which pointed out that Mezzanine absorbs light. Even in the blacklit genre of trip-hop, nothing hit the low register like the pulses of the brooding "Angel" or the choked-out, smoked-out vocals on "Risingson". But what saves this from being a mere opium drip soundtrack are the flashes of pop: the subtle hooks, the dependable songwriting, and-- most of all-- the spare use of Elizabeth Fraser's high vocal wisps. On "Teardrop" and especially "Group Four", the contrast between that fleeting beacon and the void below evoke far more drama than their writing ever could-- like some classic mythological painting where the gates of heaven are just barely in sight of whatever's ... First of all, this is a great cd, and anyone who likes it should go pick up the "Rock & Roll Circus" DVD if they want to hear some drug-fueled versions of a couple of this album's tunes. Second of all, the Stones didn't copy the beatles with the cover with the handwriting on it, it was meant to look like an invitation. Also, last time I checked the Beatles weren't the the only rock band to use a sitar. Besides, George was friends with Ravi Shankar who taught him, so if you're going to say the Stones copied the Beatles, I guess the Beatles copied Shankar.

I'm Not There

I'm a huge Bob Dylan fan so knew that he'd be giving artists covering his tunes a lot to work with. While I didn't know a lot of the artists, I anxiously awaited this album which seemed to take forever to arrive. All I can say is wow, wow, wow. There are a couple of tunes I probably won't burn to my IPOD, but overall this is a terrific album. I loved All Along the Watchtower (and I have about 4 or 5 covers of this), Man in the Long Black Coat, Senor, and Ring Them Bells. Highway 61 Revisited (Karen O and the Million Dollar Bashers) made me get up and dance; it goes to my "favourites" list. This is an album that is going to get a lot of play for me. I can't wait for the movie.

Its not-quite-jazz, not-quite-blues but I loved it. Nora Jones is a rare and gifted talent that only comes along once in while. Her voice is so sultry and sophisticated that I thought I was listening to a much older artist. Every song on her album invites you into the world of her soulful music for a listening experience that made me play the songs over and over. Excellent CD. You'll get lost in the music.

Every so often a musical duet compilation surfaces that is extraordinary-this CD fits the bill.Never in my wildest dreams would one expect these two artists to collaborate on a project-what a great combination.This piece of musical artistry is a must in any serious music collector's library-highly recommended.
