Just wait until August, and buy the DVD. The 'soundtrack' only has just over 30 minutes of music on it, and omits some of the good stuff! If you simply MUST HAVE it, by all means, go ahead. As for me, I'm using my copy for a coaster right this minute.

Beautiful film music in many respects, but at times perhaps a little too "sweet" and Hollywoodish for some tastes.
Another issue is one can object to is the "idealization" of African through this music -- as did Dances With Wolves music idealize the U.S. Western frontier -- from a distinctly Northern European standpoint. For myself, this is not particularly an issue, as the movie stands on its own as a work of art (and clearly does take a mostly European perspective), so does not have to be culturally African...

I have not yet heaard this recording but was privelaged enough to have been seated on the stage for the very first preview performance on Broadway this week. I must say that there is no doubt in my mind that this will be a huge hit. Everyone in the packed Eugene O`neill theatre on thursday night knew that they had just witnessed something truly special. The rousing applause that continued through three encores was proof enough that this young cast and this vibrant script and music is in for a long successsful journey filled with sold-out shows and Tony awards.
It is a rock/pop musical by Duncan Sheik and the young cast voices are real artists as the songs take you out of the story and create a sort of representation of the emotions and circumstances playing ... Read More:

I remember listening to these songs in the 80s when I was little. I guess you could say I 'grew up' on this stuff almost as much as on 80's music itself. It's largely a Motown/Soul collection, but it's varied enough to fit more than one audience.
1) "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," Marvin Gaye -- Everybody has heard this pop/soul hit before, right? A mid tempo ballad about hearing rumors 'Through The Grapevine'. This is one of the classic breakup songs.
2) "My Girl," Temptations -- Another widely known hit that many people today even like. This is probably the defining Motown song of the era. Sunny, pop inflected R&B about being with 'My Girl' and feeling good.
3) "Good Lovin," Rascals -- We take a turn toward ... Read More:

The only reason I wanted this CD is for Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. However March of the Toreadors immediately follows it. I see that it was arranged in alphabetical order but I wonder if it wasn't also a cruel joke. I now am conditioned to have my nerves jolted every time I put in the CD and listen to the Moonlight Sonata.
