This marvelous film, THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE, was adapted from the stage play, THE MADNESS OF GEORGE III and takes place in 1788. It centers around King George III (of course) and his battle with, what doctors thought at the time, was insanity. (Today, it is generally thought that George was suffering from porphyria, a physical, rather than an emotional, illness.)
As the film opens, George, who's been ruling for thirty years (and lost the American colonies, by the way), is beginning to show sings of definite irritability, belligerence and instability as well as gastric distress. Although his wife, Queen Charlotte, is concerned (she is the mother of his fifteen children, after all), the Prince of Wales looks upon his father's ... Read More:

When it comes to this movie, my talent for cinimatic analysis goes right out the window. Yeah, it has a quiet intensity that I enjoyed. It also has some good acting, although at times it seemed a little contrived. The script was good, but also at times it seemed like it had written it's self into a corner. Nastassja Kinski is as beautiful as ever and deserves far more camera time than she get's. Those are all good, but.....the absolute greatest, quintessential, worhwhile reason for owning this movie and watching this movie over and over again is that Ming Na appears nearly naked and is absolutely gorgeous.

Only once in awhile does a movie come along that stirs me up. It's not always a big blockbuster movie like Lord of The Rings or Star Wars. Sometimes, more often than not it is the little guy movies, the ones that are pushed aside in favor of big fancy dazzle movies. This movie is one such movie. I had never honestly heard about it, but one night, while staying up very, very late, it came on TV and I was very interested. Being a long time Kelsey Grammer fan I immediately decided to go beyond the exhaustion I was feeling and dig in to watch this movie. Well, it turned out to be a movie that instantly gripped me and held me to the end. The humour is mostly dry and subdued, but never dull. And the story is great. Being a struggling author myself I found the story to be ... Read More:

This film was just plain dumb. I see very few have bothered to even write a review. That says a lot. There is little plot, no character development, and the NC-17 rating isn't appropriate. Maybe because this movie is kind of old...The sex scenes are mild. Anyway, Gabriel Byrne has very few lines and just avoid this...

The day dream of anyone I ever met, put to screen in a fairly representative version of the book by Lucy Irvine who actually did pursue her dream of living on a deserted Island. The pitfalls and a honeymoon gone to trash upon arrival pose questions we all need to ask ourselves. The scenery is gorgeous and if you ever wanted to walk naked on a deserted beach in a remote corner of the Indian Ocean. This is a movie worth watching and sharing with your loved one.

but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This is typical Russell; weird non-fitting dreams, and definietly not enough violence, horror or sex when, here, it wouldn't be superfluous, but highly helpful in making the film better. The acting is interesting, to say the least. Worth a watch or two, but try to get a cheap used copy.
