Cool World

starring: Janni Brenn-Lowen, Brad Pitt, William Frankfather, Greg Collins (II), Gabriel Byrne
directed by: Ralph Bakshi

May 14, 1996
The movie is poorly written not to mention the lame special effects. Its a completly souless film. If you liked Fritz the Cat,Wizards,American Pop, or other films by Ralph Bakshi, than stay away from this, because its embarassing.

directed by: Steven Spielberg

this is the movie that ushered in a whole new era for movies.the
original shark movie.the movie quickly became part of pop culture
history, and has inspired(and i use that term loosely, for the most
part)many pale imitations and pretenders.but no one has had anywhere
near the impact "Jaws" had and continues to have.this movie did for
swimming in the ocean what psycho did for showering.the movie has an OK
story, but that is not the focal point of this movie.what drives this
movie is the suspense and,at times almost unbearable tension.and that's
coming from someone who had seen the movie at least once before,so i
knew what to expect.the main reason for this is the the musical score
by the great ... Read More:

No Way to Treat a Lady

starring: Rod Steiger, Lee Remick, George Segal, Eileen Heckart, Murray Hamilton
directed by: Jack Smight

August 25, 1998
A very perceptive bio-writer in one of the British film reference books (I forget which) noted that Lee Remick was basically quite badly used by Hollywood and that after such early career successes as ANATOMY OF A MURDER and DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, she somehow wound up being relegated to "girlfriend" roles in mid-60s comedies (e.g. this one and other fluffier fare like THE WHEELER DEALERS) or was cast as the "wife" (THE DETECTIVE--well, OK, it's a wife role with a twist--she's a nymphomaniac--BUT it was basically a secondary role nonetheless).

It was no wonder that by the 70s, she basically became a TV actress. At least that medium offered her meatier and, yes, starring roles. For years, she seemed locked in a rivalry with Liz Montgomery for the ... Read More:

Christmas Vacation

starring: Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Randy Quaid, Miriam Flynn, William Hickey
directed by: Jeremiah S. Chechik

August 26, 2003
All too often, I have found the words "National Lampoon's" to be synonymous with "not funny," but National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is actually a pretty entertaining film. Christmas at the Griswold's turns out just like you would expect it to, with Clark (Chevy Chase) trying to persevere in the face of one disaster after another. With the whole family coming over, he wants everything to be perfect -- from the Christmas tree he finds and cuts down (er, digs up) himself to the thousands of lights he staples all over the house. He's not completely stupid, though -- he knows his parents and his wife's parents are going to argue throughout the holidays, that his wife and kids aren't all that excited about sharing Christmas with the rest of the family, and that Aunt Bethany ... 1941

starring: Dan Aykroyd, Ned Beatty, John Belushi, Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton
directed by: Steven Spielberg

October 29, 2002
I saw this many years ago, and decided to give it another chance. It was an education. What did I learn from this movie? Spielberg can not do comedy! I give it high marks for cinematography, sound, costumes, etc. - very Spielberg-like. But the story and the gross caricatures we must endure are not only amateurish - but also embarrassing! These characters try to be soooo funny, that they are painful to even watch. I had to fast-forward through many scenes. Ironically, this may have been a good movie if the director and writers had played it straight - depicting the serious angst that followed Pearl harbor. In this movie. Spielberg pays his respects to Jaws. The opening scene is obvious, with the naked girl in the water - yet he also resurrects two other actors from Jaws - ... Read More:

Caddyshack

starring: Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Michael O'Keefe, Bill Murray
directed by: Harold Ramis

April 06, 1999
i had hear a lot about how great this movie is,over the years.so
imagine my shock and disappointment to find out it's not good.i didn't
find it funny,or amusing,or even entertaining.i swear i never even
smiled once.i realise this is just my opinion of course, but i just
can't get over how people rave about this movie.it boggles the
mind.anyway, for whatever reason,i didn't think this was a good movie at
all.in fact,it's brutal.there are some big comedy names of the era in
this one,so you'd think that would count for something.but it doesn't
seem to,at least in my opinion.i'm sure i'm in the minority, but my vote
for Caddyshack is a dismal 1/5

Brotherhood, the

starring: Kirk Douglas, Alex Cord, Irene Papas, Luther Adler, Susan Strasberg
directed by: Martin Ritt

May 07, 1996
I viewed this movie years ago at my local cinema and up to now I have not had the chance to view it again either on TV or Video. How refreshing it was to purchase the DVD and see it for what it is,a truly wonderful film. The on location photography is excellent and Kirk Douglas delivered his best performance since Spartacus eight years previous. True, one knows it dates from the sixties but it retains its power and surpisingly is only 96 minutes long. No movie today can pack as much tension in that time frame without overdoing the drama. All in all 5 stars for a great DVD,never mind that there are no extras

Brubaker

starring: Robert Redford, Yaphet Kotto, Jane Alexander, Murray Hamilton, David Keith
directed by: Stuart Rosenberg

May 20, 2003
This ranks right up there with ... as one of the great "hero with integrity goes up against the corrupt system" movies of all time.

I used to teach American Government and would show this and Redford's ... Two of the best political films of all time.

This movie brings up many important and insightful issues involving prison reform/management.
