i love the concept of this film. it's classier than silly beatles fan fic because it simply is an intriuging story--beatles or not. budget shortfalls are way too visable though, and the acting isn't nearly as good as the director would like us to believe. further, the director's commentary and interview are incredibly BORING. he laughed ONCE and smiled just a few times. don't buy this...just rent it off netflix.

I'm an Ingmar Bergman neophyte and have seen about ten of his films to date, and I think this one haunted me the most. It couldn't leave my mind for a few days. It's crammed with hopelessness and emptiness, and to put it bluntly, is quite depressing. I was able to put up with Persona, Cries and Whispers, The Seventh Seal, and a few others with a fierce motivation to assess and analyze, but this one left me quite deflated. I think it was because of the way the little boy was used; he is left to roam the hotel occupied by weird hotelkeepers and dwarves that like to dress him up in girl clothes while his mother is out all day on sexual rampages with complete strangers, while his dying aunt spends her last days in a room upstairs. The pain displayed is ... Read More:

First of all, I was shocked to find that you could actually purchase this DVD. This is an old film, but old enough that the innuendoes are still there; not a lot is spelled out.
New Orleans is the setting, but you'd never know it as most of the shots are interior. The psychology is amazing, though, and you'll find yourself completely wrapped up in the story.
For those not interested in the lesbian overtones, the prostitution themes alone will suffice. Jane Fonda is amazing and in fact, did an amazing thing by being in this movie. Even today, anyone who would dare to make something that would equal the lines of "Walk" by today's standards would be taking a chance with their career.

"The Garden" is the only (but not last) film I saw by the late gay British director Derek Jarman. I was impressed. Sex and religion, so I've read, seem to be a recurrent theme in Jarman's work. I'm not gonna brag to much about the "daring" portrayal of homosexuality, although this film clearly sought to make a (subtle) statement. To me it was refreshing, sensual, and at some point quite erotic. I myself am not gay, but Jarman's experimental touch poses a unabashed alternative to the recent "gay movies" coming out of Hollywood.

Yet again Amazon.com proves it is 'King of the Off-Beat'.
This movie is campy fun from beginning to end.
Michael and Liz are trapped in a sadisistic love-hate marriage until one day they set off for a typical party of the 'Swinging London Scene', where Michael sees and falls for the ever-so-sensitive Susannah York...pale,blonde,widowed single mother of twins. Liz will have none of it & with the help of her gay pal tries every trick in the book to win him back...suicide attempts, lesbian seduction...she'll stop at nothing.
Liz is at her absolute hysterical best, even the dreary Michael Caine can't put out her light.

I am really surprised that the reviews are so bad!! Okay, some of the conversations do not have much sense (like when talking about relationships between men and women) but the story is not about these relationships its about INTIMACY VS SEX. Its about how each person looks for intimacy in different ways..Its about discovering your sexual orientation...Its about fear...Its about love...Its about music.. Its this kind of film that makes you think. And I find it perfectly describes the way in which two women approach each other..Its so real, the way that they look at each other, the way they try to get near but are afraid to get hurt, the seduction...Its so good! I just find its one of the best films ive ever seen! Low budget, great story, great acting!
