Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Jane Powell (III), Howard Keel, Jeff Richards, Russ Tamblyn, Tommy Rall
directed by: Stanley Donen

January 06, 1998
It's a typical musical, happy endings and all. I'm a big Howard Keel fan and I like how he's always literally larger than life. The music and the dancing are great. The barn raising sequence is a wonder to watch...of course we can't forget the rest of the cast, rising stars in the making...Julie Newmar/Newmeyer, Russ Tamblyn, Tommy Rall and Jacques D'Amboise...And the interviews as part of the special features were great...these actors have aged with grace...and the movie is timeless....

City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, Jon Lovitz, Jack Palance, Patricia Wettig
directed by: Paul Weiland

September 02, 1997
City Slickers is a very good movie and though sequels often pale in comparison this sequel was actually pretty good and Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern and Jack Palance were still in top form and I liked the addition of Jon Lovitz as Billy's lazy freeloading brother but I wish that Bruno Kirby was in this sequel too reprising his roll from the original but it's still a good movie and I highly recommend it and I hope to buy this and the first movie on DVD!

Lawman

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, Lee J. Cobb, Robert Duvall, Sheree North
directed by: Michael Winner

September 01, 1998
I am compelled to write a review of Lawman in an attempt to dispell some oft repeated misunderstandings about the film. The most common error applied to the film is that it is morally ambiguous. Lawman the film is not morally ambiguous as such. The Lawman, Jered Maddox (Lancaster), is clearly the most outstanding and praiseworthy figure or character in the film. The confusion comes in only if we attempt to univeralize morality in a Kantian fashion, thereby making the actions of the Lawman "immoral" because of his willingness to use force. The fact that the majority of the other characters are immoral or simply utilitarian (looking only to their self intersest) in their moral views does not in any way mystify the issue to those willing to clearly ... Young Billy Young

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Robert Mitchum, Angie Dickinson, Robert Walker Jr., David Carradine, Jack Kelly
directed by: Burt Kennedy

September 01, 1998
good movie, not great. interesting action scenes however a little too pyschologically bent. The jazz score although well played, is out of place. You'll recognize many vetran western actors such as Paul Fix, David Carradine, Jack Kelly, and John Anderson

Apache

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Burt Lancaster, Jean Peters, John McIntire, Charles Bronson, John Dehner
directed by: Robert Aldrich

September 01, 1998
"Both Burt Lancaster and Jean Peters give outstanding performances" - wrote Variety in 1954 - and after watching this movie for the umpteenth time I believe they do deliver great performances in APACHE. It was the first one made by Holywood that dared to portray a movie from the Indian's point of view; and that alone deserves some credit.
A bit of TRIVIA
Jean Peters's performance in Apache, according to director Robert Aldrich, is even more outstanding because she had a personal dislike of Lancaster as a person and had to show complete devotion towards him throughout the entire film. Despite this fact, the two actors had some sort of chemestry in their scenes together that comes accross on the screen.
On top of that, both these actors were ... Read More:

Horse Soldiers

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: John Wayne, William Holden, Constance Towers, Judson Pratt, Hoot Gibson
directed by: John Ford

April 01, 2003
I love this movie. John Wayne's swagger, William Holden's class, and Constance Towers' charm. They all combine to make an excellent Civil War Movie based on an actually raid that pushed deep into the South.

The movie of course isn't accurate but that doesn't matter. The drama and action are great and there isn't any silly romance to ruin things. Constance Towers' presence helps in the development of John Wayne's character but doesn't slip into any thing that distracts from the main part of the movie.

There are also some great battle scenes. My favorite is the VMI cadet charge. This was also based on a real event that apparently wasn't as big of a deal as in the movie but is still interesting to read about if you get a chance.

Chato's Land

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Charles Bronson, Jack Palance, James Whitmore, Simon Oakland, Ralph Waite
directed by: Michael Winner

September 15, 1998
Without Charles Bronson, this would be a three star movie at best. The plot is simple, like a slasher movie in the Old West. Bronson, ever effective as an Indian (remember Drumbeat as Captain Jack?), kills off a posse one by one. The posse is filled with well-known character actors and of these, Jack Palance stands out. Palance is the leader of the group in name only, and his relations with the others is the most interesting. He was certainly an under-used actor as he matured, but this was a good role for him.
Bronson gets to display probably the best over 50 physique in the world (maybe under 50 too, for that matter). It may have been Frank Frazetta who said that the perfect actor for the role of Conan would be a 6'5" Charles Bronson. With little if any character ... Read More:
