Extreme Prejudice

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Nick Nolte, Powers Boothe, Michael Ironside, Maria Conchita Alonso, Rip Torn
directed by: Walter Hill

THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW 'NOLTE' FLICKS I CAN RECOMMEND. HE IS A GOOD ENOUGH ACTOR, BUT HE USUALLY PLAYS MENTALLY UNSTRUNG DRUNKS.
BUT IN THIS ONE WHICH IS STRICTLY ACTION FARE, HE PLAYS STRAIGHT AS AN OLD SCHOOL RANGER COMMITTED TO HIS CODE.
NOT FACT, BUT A LONG WAY FROM PURE FICTION LIKE T.V.S 'WALKER'
NOLTE IS JACK BENTEEN PITTED AGAINST HIS ONE TIME BUDDY CASH BAILEY (POWERS BOOTH) THE ACROSS THE RIVER DRUG LORD WHO IS POLLUTING THE RANGERS JURISDICTION WITH DRUGS AND KILLING FOLKS IN THE PROCESS.
BENTEEN GIVES HIS OLD COMPADRE 'HEADS UP' BUT THE GOON IS "IN TOO DEEP."
SOME FREE LANCE MILITARY SPOOKS GET IN THE THICK OF THINGS AND THE ACTION HEATS UP.
THERE ARE SOME VERY PECKINPAH TYPE BALLETIC SHOOTOUTS AND ... Read More:

Son of the Morning Star

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Gary Cole, Rosanna Arquette, Stanley Anderson, Edward Blatchford, George Dickerson
directed by: Mike Robe

January 01, 1998
The purpose of "Son of the Morning Star," both the book and the miniseries, was to show that George A. Custer is not just a symbol, good or bad, for culural/political causes, but a human being with flaws and attributes. A previous review is a perfect example of the failure to see Custer as anything but as a symbol. To some people, Custer is the embodiment of the evils of Manifest Destiny. It's an ironic fate for someone who died in the most spectacular, albeit temporary, setback for Manifest Destiny.

Custer is a fascinating historical figure because of his symbolism. So many people have such strong feelings about him for what he represents, but so few people really know anything about him. Born the son of blacksmith ... Read More:

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Jeanette MacDonald, Nelson Eddy, Reginald Owen, Allan Jones, James Stewart
directed by: W.S. Van Dyke

Rose Marie has it all. Wonderful music, a great story. Good clean entertainment. As for acting, this is Jeanette's and Nelson's best. It is also the first movie Jimmy Stewart was in.
2 of my favorite scenes is when Jeanette and Nelson are in the canoe and he is singing to her. They other scene is she is hungry and he his cooking beans. The looks on their faces are perfectly acted.

Rio Grande

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Ben Johnson, Claude Jarman Jr., Harry Carey Jr.
directed by: John Ford

November 24, 1998
RIO GRANDE nicely finishes off the John Ford Cavalry Trilogy. While not as intense as FORT APACHE, or touching as SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, RIO GRANDE earns its stripes with the trademarks of the trilogy: luminous direction, straight forward story telling and solid work from The Duke, Maureen O'Hara and of course, Victor McLaglen, who steels the first 20 minutes of the film. "Welcome home, darling," he bows to O'Hara as she's escorted into the fort by The Duke, to which she replies: "I see you still have that ox with you." Pappy and The Duke have the regular Ford/Wayne troop still with them and it works. The Sons of the Pioneers offer a new song book, but the band still plays "The Girl I Left Behind Me" when the cavalry ... Read More:

Fancy Pants

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Bob Hope, Virginia Keiley, Lucille Ball, Percy Helton, Robin Hughes
directed by: George Marshall

April 02, 1996
A remake with songs of "Ruggles of Red Gap", "Mr.Robert Hope" plays an English Valet going to work for Lucille Ball's nouveau riche family in the Wild West. For fans of Hope and Lucy, this is a delight. They're in top form in "Fancy Pants"...the name given Hope by tomboy Lucy. Good supporting cast helps enliven this spoof, but it's Hope and Lucy who really pull it off. They're a great team. Lucy sings "Fancy Pants" and there are other songs and lots of slapstick and beautiful Technicolor filming that helps explain why Lucy was once known in Hollywood as "Tessie Technicolor". She's gorgeous here. "Fancy Pants" is good, clean, fun family fare and, sadly, another example of the kind of film "they just don't make anymore". And yes, you can see Lucy Ricardo emerging in ... Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: John Wayne, Glen Campbell, Kim Darby, Jeremy Slate, Robert Duvall
directed by: Henry Hathaway

January 06, 2004
This is only the second wayne movie I have ever watched. So I basically went into it with my eyes wide shut. This is a remarkably likable movie in which I think co star kim darby steals the show! This movie had alot of funny one-liners that were very witty. I figured this movie would be just like all the rest of the westerns I have seen, but this one stands out. John Wayne won an oscar for this movie. Very impressive!

Young Guns

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen, Dermot Mulroney
directed by: Christopher Cain

October 26, 1999
I always thought of this film as a western for young people. I don't understand the "brat pack" label. I could give some pretty friggin' nasty labels to some John Wayne films I've seen. And please don't tell me there's such a thing as a thinking man's western. Is Young Guns not a quality western since it lacks some vacuous, ponderous shots of deserts with a raspy-voiced squinty eyed god-fearing fat alcoholic moron squinting into the sun and speaking like a disgruntled janitor about how he's going to get his revenge on someone who done wronged him? I always though Young Guns was exciting and funny with a cast of youthfuls who make the 'mistake' of acting youthful in front of the screen. And as for Terrence Stamp? He's friggin' horrible! He gets blown off the screen ... Read More:

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: James Stewart, Maureen O'Hara, Brian Keith, Juliet Mills, Don Galloway
directed by: Andrew V. McLaglen

January 29, 2002
Jimmy Stewart had a habit of making good movies and this is one of them. It tells the story of introducing hereford(or herford) cattle to the united states and it does it partly lighthearted and partly serious. Brian Keith shows up as well as absolutely wonderful former scottish highlander soldier who's taken up ranching in the west. Keith is just great as the old cantankerous scottsman. The herford bull(named vindicator) is cleverly portrayed as well without being silly.

Back to/Future III

Childrens Toy Shop > VHS > Westerns
starring: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Mary Steenburgen, Thomas F. Wilson, Lea Thompson
directed by: Robert Zemeckis

September 12, 1991
A film by Robert Zemeckis

"Back to the Future Part III" is the third and concluding chapter to the "Back to the Future" trilogy. For many years this was my least favorite film in the trilogy, but watching it again for the first time in years I have new appreciation for it. "Back to the Future Part III" is a satisfying and worthy end to this trilogy.

At the end of the second movie the DeLorean is struck by lightening (which we already know provides the necessary 1.21 gigawatts of energy required for time travel) and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) is sent somewhen in time. Marty (Michael J Fox) is stuck in 1955 Hill Valley, but just after Doc and the DeLorean disappears a letter arrives for Marty. The letter is from Doc and was written in 1885. It was left as the post ... Read More:
