Enjoyable Western that even non-Wayne fans should find entertaining. Film blends equal parts mystery, bravado, romance, and humor in fairly smooth fashion. Mystery plot comes from actor-writer Paul Fix, comic relief from incomparable Gabby Hayes, while convincing bravado is supplied by you-know-who. Still and all, this is a Gabby Hayes showcase, and I would think a high point of his career ( he had just left the Hopalong series). In fact, the first ten minutes are among the funniest and most satisfying of any Western on record: the chemistry between Hayes and Wayne is simply terrific and easily tops that between Wayne and his two leading ladies. This film stars Kris Kristofferson and Scott Bairstow as two fugitives from Louisiana. They go on the run after killing one of the two sadistic bosses (who also happen to be brothers) of the prison camp. The other boss begins a Captain Ahab-type of pursuit after the two escapees. Kristofferson's character knows about the war for independence occuring in Texas and figures the best chance they have of escape is to join Sam Houston's army. Along the way, an Indian slave joins the duo and Barstow's character and her fall in love. However, the two must separate when they make a dash for Houston's camp.

Kirstofferson is perfect in roles like this one and Bairstow doesn't do too bad of a job either, though the change in his character was a bit ... Read More:

This is one of the standard action serials - no plot, no acting skills, and no budget. If you want that, then go ahead and buy this.

The copy I have was promoted (on the box) as the original story of zorro, and as a 1960's TV classic.
