Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: This complex 1996 drama directed by Harold Becker (Sea of Love) attempts to explore big-city corruption and the flexibility of what's right and wrong in the political arena. John Cusack plays the senior aide to mayor John Pappas (Al Pacino), a popular and seasoned politician whose administration is threatened when what seems to be an accidental shooting of a child reveals a nest of corruption and lifelong personal debts. This tests Cusack's loyalty to the man he thought he knew. Pacino turns in a finely textured performance as a man who has his own lofty ideals, but whose pragmatism sets in motion a series of events with tragic results. Cusack admirably captures the essence of someone polished and savvy at his job but must cope with fundamental disillusionment. This political thriller suffers at times from a lack of focus, but still offers an insightful and poignant treatise on the quagmire of politics in the modern age and the human toll it sometimes exacts. --Robert Lane Customer Reviews

 Rating:  - Rather trite altogetherThe film concerns a classic theme. In fact it concerns the theme exploited by Batman, from beginning to end, but in real data and details. The mayor of New York, appreciated and very diligent and dynamic, in order to get some project through slightly faster than normal, yields to some pressure from some private business contractors about a criminal drug dealer who should have been sent and kept in prison and he pressurizes the judge in his turn to set him free on probation in spite of a negative probation report that disappears but is not destroyed, be it only because of the political value it represents. And what was to happen happens and a few people, including a black schoolboy is killed in a shoot out between a police detective and that ... Read More: Rating:  - City DullWatched this movie recently and i was quite dissapointed, i found this lengthly film about potential corruption in the mayor's office very hard to follow and found myself repeating scenes just to try an pick up the thread of the story. The legend that is Al Pacino plays his part well while John Cusack and Bridget Fonda turn in good performances but even that does'nt save this confusing an ungripping film. Rating: - City HallBeing a john Cusack fan I have seen most of his films, this is not like his normal characters. He doesnt speak into the camera or do his shy lovey dovey bit. However the film is very insightful, it is not Al Pachino's best role but none the less it is a powerful analysis of bribery and corruption in politics. I would advise you to watch this film when yopu have enough time to do so, it is very complex and may be hard to keep up with the plot also any die hard Cusack fans may be wary of it. however if you do give it a go you will find it to be a well scripted and directed film. Rating: - John Cusack - AMAZING, Al Pacino - Looking GoodAlthough this film was not all that I expected it to be I found it to be an extremely interesting story, which kept me hooked right until the end. I had previously been a massive Pacino fan and he does not disappoint, but I had only seen one of John Cusacks films (Grosse Point Blank) and I found his performance to be overwhelming in this, very believable and a character you couldn't help but like. A MUST see for any Cusack or Pacino fans. |
