Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: Actor Griffin Dunne improves a bit on his first film as a director, Addicted to Love, with this drama-comedy about a family of witches. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock play spell-casting sisters of different temperaments: the former is a high-living, free-spirited sort, while Bullock's character is a homebody who can't get around a family curse that kills the men in their lives. A widowed single mom, Bullock gets into a jam with an abusive Bulgarian (Goran Visnjic) and is helped out by her sibling, but the result brings a good-looking, warm, inquisitive cop (Aidan Quinn) into their lives. The film has a variety of tonal changes--cute, scary, glum--that Dunne can't always effectively juggle. But the female-centric, celebratory nature of the film (the fantasies, the sharing, the witchy bonds) is infectious, and supporting roles by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as Kidman and Bullock's magical aunts are a lot of fun. --Tom Keogh

The story line is loosely based on a book by Alice Hoffman. It is more of the screen play by Robin Swicord who also did the screen play for "Matilda" (1996).
Sisters Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman) are brought up by their maiden aunts after their parents died. They learn of magic and its pluses and minuses by observing their aunts from a distance. They also have to overcome (if possible) the family curse that the gentlemen in their lives are distending to meat an early demise. One highlight of the movie is when we find that the other women in the village really did not distain the Owens's; is just that they have not been invited to help.
The story deviates from the book in the since that ... Read More:

Well if you find the first ten minutes or so silly and saccharin sweet hold on in there. Rather unimaginative directing and a poorly thought out sound track are well and truly rescued by an unusual and well crafted storyline.
The ending is a little rushed, but by then who cares because you have watched an entertaining movie. Recommended.

i really enjoyed this movie. i first saw it ages and ages ago with my best friend at school and always remembered it as having an impact on me, recently i dug the video out the bottom of my wardrobe and relived it all over again, still as good as i remember, i love nicole kidman so for me it was brilliant just because of her anyway, but the story was fun and i really enjoyed it!

Practical Magic had a lively beginning but it soon became tedious to watch, largely because the dialogue was uninteresting and not very original or attention grabbing.Another big problem was that the witches lacked credibility - even when Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman were casting a spell they just seemed to be saying a rhyme like any other mortal. They lacked an aura,a presence,an air,an authority, perhaps a belief in the parts they were acting out.If you watch the television series Charmed (about three witches who are sisters too),there is something natural and believable about the witches and their powers.
I suspect that it's not just better scripts and timing and acting but also the great special effects that the Charmed team use.

....And drink it all up. And that's exactly what i did with this movie.
Me, my mum, my sister and my best friend all love this film.
I haven't read the book and didn't even know that there was one, but i plan on buying and reading it. It wont matter if it's different from the film because i love this film ayway.
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman shine on screen and make for good acting partners, which i found surprising.
Goran Visjnic (i think that's how you spell it), was excellent as the creepy boyfriend and Stockard Channing and Dianne Weist were perfect as the slightly eccentric aunts.
The story revolves mainly around two sisters who live in a small town with their aunts.
There is a curse upon the female's ... Read More:
