Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: For anyone who wants to catch a glimpse of the Los Angeles "lounge" scene that was in vogue during the early and mid-1990s, here's the movie that virtually defined that brief but colourful nightlife milieu. As an added bonus, it just happens to be a very funny, observant story about love, loss and male bonding among a group of friends who struggle to find decent jobs by day, and lurk through Hollywood's hottest nightclubs by night. A sort of latter-day Rat Pack, they include Mike (writer-actor Jon Favreau) and his closest buddy, Trent (Vince Vaughn), who are waiting for the big show-biz break that seems to be eluding them. Mike's twisted up about the girlfriend he left back East to pursue his going-nowhere standup comedy career, and Trent uses the word "money" as an adjective ("Man, we look totally money tonight") with such frequency that you may find yourself slipping into lounge-lizard mode after watching the movie. One of the most noteworthy indie-film success stories of the 90s, Swingers is a time-capsule comedy that seized its moment in the spotlight, launched several promising careers and continues to maintain its lasting appeal. --Jeff Shannon

I first watched this film at University, after a friend bought it and stuck it on the communal DVD player; then watched it again, and again, and now watch my own copy of it from time to time eight years on. The soundtrack is great, the direction is great, and everything just seems to work really well. The characters are all also genuinley likable, with Vince Vaughn's performance being particularly memorable. Its also hilarious at times, right up until the end.

Swingers split me quite a lot. On one hand, the direction is nothing to write home about, when not, admittedly humorously, homaging films like Reservoir Dogs, the director plays it safe with standard camera set ups and doesn't try much inventive with the medium. On the other hand, the film is funny and the writing pretty decent too, Jon Favreau plays the sulky-just-come-out-of-a-long-term-relationship protagonist in such away that the we, the audience, never find his portrayal annoying, instead coming out as an engaging character we can all relate to. Good indie cinema, but fun rather than interesting, more akin to Hollywood than alternative film.

This film is about a group of male friends who travel from bar to bar and club to club drinking, chatting up women, and philosophising on why they haven't got the jobs they want and the women they want. Some of the dialogue is long-winded but the good dialogue is very funny. As a bunch of
wanabees who were probably going to get nowhere in life, these actors were very convincing.

Ignore any negative comments you might read about Swingers, this is an absolute classic. It's brilliantly scripted, acted so naturally and most guys can relate to it. Even though it is a lad's movie, women can enjoy it at another level. Jon Favreau (Mikey) and Vince Vaughn (Trent) clearly feel good working together and you can tell they are mates off-screen, as this shows in the two main character's relationship. I would say, don't buy this version, buy the Special Edition version which has got loads of extras.

Although this is an old film now, I only rented it out a week ago. There were two reasons for renting this 1997 film in 2007: 1) I'd recently read about a very funny scene where a guy messes up the next day call back after meeting a girl in the bar. 2) A long-term relationship had ended and I was going out with friends to bars and clubs more.
I was expecting a funny and accurate account of the trails 'n' tribulations of twentysomethings hitting the town and trying to meet women. While I found this film in Swingers, I also discovered something very unexpected that helped me a lot. Not only do you get a film about single guys hitting on girls in clubs and occasionally making a fool of themselves, there's a great film in here about ... Read More:
