Amazon.co.uk Review: One of the best fighting games ever, Soul Calibur not only offers you a fantastic plethora of fighting moves, characters and action, but also the chance to bury your PlayStation friends into the ground with its oozing graphics.
Based on the great old fighting formula, you chose to play one of 19 characters in their individual quest for the ultimate trophy "The Soul Calibur". Yet the game doesn't just rest on its fighting laurels; it offers a whole host of gaming options: arcade mode, versus mode, team battle, time attack, survival, mission battle and art gallery modes.
With choices ranging from how many characters you can defeat before you yourself are knocked out to working on a team level with multiple characters, it seems unlikely that this game will not keep you amused for quite sometime. If all this isn't enough, the game also opens up as you play. More characters, levels and even an art gallery of production and gameplay stills become available the more you play and the more you complete. If you want the choice of all the characters, you need to complete the game with every character first.
What Namco have done is create a great game that also acts as a benchmark to anything else that follows it. The graphics are the best you're likely to see on the Dreamcast with both characters and scenery getting their fair share of the processing power available. Normally, fantastic graphics make for sometimes poor gameplay, because too much time has been given to putting that shine on the product, yet here, nothing has been hindered, creating a game that is superb. --Stuart Miles

Having played both Soul calibur 2 and 3 i was glad to see that the first is not lacking in any of the parts that make the newer soul caliburs such cool games, great graphics, hours of gameplay, the amount of moves and characters available not to mention the different modes of gameplay and my favourite characters in it from the beginning. In my opinion the world of beat-em-ups really needs more like this, then how could anybody be bored, because i certainly will never get bored of Soul Calibur.

Hard video game fact - there are only two beat-em-up's that count for anything, "Street Fighter" and "Virtua Fighter". Well, 6 years ago that statement would have been perfectly true. But Capcom and SEGA finally got a fighting game to give them a run for thier money, thier challenger was Namco and there are many that will tell you the release of "SoulCalibur" signaled the end of previously mentioned titles reign on top of the beat-em-ep heap. I'm one of the many. "SoulCalibur", is, in a word, awesome. In every possible aspect the game excels and leaves it's rivals standing in the dust. Although about 6 years old now, the visuals in this game still hold thier own and remain solid - if not as stunning as they were in the games hey day. But to ... Read More:

I'll admit it - straight up - I didn't like beat 'em ups . I didn't understand the whole combination button thing , couldn't work out which button did which , and all in all thought the games were pointless as single player affairs . Then Soul Caliber came along and changed my mind . There was an easily accessible menu to work out how to perform combinations , the story mode was interesting and varied , with different scenarios producing different targets , and the animations and charaters themselves were excellently brought to life . It took me a while to finish it , but it was well worth it .

This is one of the best fighting game I've ever played in my life and that is saying something since I've played everything from Street Fighter to Tekken.
It is a fast paced fun game with interesting characters and story line, with leads on from the original Soul Edge/Blade, with is on the Play Station platform.
It’s a beautiful game with astonishing visuals and the characters that can move in a full 360 degrees around the arena’s from any side. This makes the game unique and unlike any other beat em up.
It's characters move in a very real fashion plus they all have some brilliant special moves, as well as grabs and throws.
The game also has many special features like an art gallery and third ... Read More:

This game is one of the reasons I bought a Dreamcast. A sequal to the Playstation title Soulblade, Sega really excelled itself this time, with brutal graphics and fan tastic sound quality. This is no ordinary enter-the-arena-and-fight games. In the Story Mode, you travel to various locations throughout the world and use special methods to defeat them, and there's also a plot to follow. Other than that, there is the standard Arcade Mode, Practice Mode, Survival Mode, and many others, including hidden modes. Whether you're a die hard Soulblade fan, or you just like a good slash-fest, this game is the one for you.
