Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: You are Solid Snake, a super spy who is half James Bond, half Snake Plissken, and you are mean. Your mission isn't terribly new (infiltrate a terrorist base and blow everything up), but the gameplay is: your numerous enemies are watching for you, and you are encouraged to sneak rather than simply charge in. Every level brings new challenges. You fight snipers, invisible ninjas, psychic warriors and even an M-1 tank! As the father of the modern spy-game genre, this game is an instant classic. Your allies and superiors speak to you via a cool, implanted radio, monitoring your progress, offering tips--but failing to give you the full story. The combination of a mysterious and engaging plot and high in-game tension makes this a thrilling ride. Campy humour also abounds as you rescue beautiful women, verbally spar with your allies and blow up enemies in the bathroom. A user-friendly control interface allows for sniping, hiding, crawling and running, and the graphics leave nothing to be desired. If you like espionage, spy movies, or just want to own and play a piece of gaming history, then this is a must-have. Metal Gear Solid is one of the all-time greats.  Rating: - Simply Epic.Nothing more you can say about it really. I would actually say this game is the greatest game of all time. But now it is getting harder and harder as Metal Gear Solid 4 came out recently. But what i can say is...The Metal Gear Solid series is definately the best there is. Metal Gear Solid will go down in history as one of the best games ever. Rating: - Not the first title in Metal Gear.. but the first game that brought the series attentionPrior to this game (there are 2 eariler games available on the MSX computers, and a spinoff on the NES), Metal Gear wasn't quite the household name, the original Metal Gear did manage to be an unexpected million seller when it hit the NES in '87, despite not being Kojima's original Metal Gear game. This game takes into account the playing style of Metal Gear 2 which was original released in 1990.. 8 years before the release of this game and launches it into a whole new 3D world, with series mainstay Solid Snake making once again his return to active duty as s group of terrorists using the "FOXHOUND" organization name (this unit was disbanded shortly after Metal Gear 2, and reinstated in MGS4 9 years prior to these events). Although the graphics in Metal Gear 2 and 3 are obviously far better due to being on PS2, I feel that the storyline is definately the strongest and most immersive in the original. It was really revolutionary at the time, and I need to play it again when I get the chance, as the series has developed so much since its humble begginings. If you were to play this after playing MGS2, or Snake Eater, you may be surprised by the lack of being able to shoot without using the first person view - I am!
