Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: Diablo 2 is finally available and, yes, it is well worth the wait. Everything that made the original Diablo great--non-stop action, wicked monsters, dark Gothic atmosphere and fantastic magic items--has returned. But new enhancements such as the class skill-system and cheater-proof multiplayer competition make Diablo 2 even better than the original. The millions of gamers who fought their way through the horror of Tristram's catacombs in the original Diablo realised that all was not well after their hero destroyed the demon's physical body. Diablo 2 opens with a vivid animated vision of that mad, doomed hero, who unwittingly spreads chaos as he moves towards a fate of Diablo's choosing. With the original character classes gone, players choose from a new cadre of champions--the Barbarian (can wield two two-handed swords at once, one in each hand), the Necromancer (raises the dead to fight his battles), the Amazon (master of bow and spear), Paladin (holy crusader) and Sorceress (wielder of elemental magic). These warriors follow a diabolical plot through four acts, and each act is roughly as big as the original Diablo. Diablo 2 looks and behaves very much like Diablo. Players are assigned quests by non-player characters and adventure through dark catacombs and crypts. Hordes of vile monsters assail the hero, who survives by force of arms, powerful spells and through the use of varied and exotic magic items. Randomly generated dungeons guarantee fresh adventure each time a new game is started. But unlike the original game, characters must fight their way through the above-ground wilderness before entering a dungeon. Fortunately, some of the frustrations of adventuring have been lessened in Diablo 2, thanks to the new ability to run and the clever implementation of "waypoints", which let your character quickly travel to and from the safety of town. Along with the new character classes comes a new character skill system. As in the original game, players improve their character's ability scores as they kill monsters and gain experience. But unlike the original game, players get to add specific skills, spells and powers each time they advance. For example, after gaining a level you could choose between taking a skill that improves your attack speed or a skill that allows you to scatter your foes with a mighty shout. With this customised advancement system it is unlikely that two high-level characters, even characters of the same class, will be alike. Instead of progressing along a set path, you can choose skills and powers that complement your own particular playing style. Interestingly, this new customisable class system closely parallels the changes made in the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Other enhancements include a method for creating and customising magic items, 3-D accelerated spell effects, anticheat multiplayer and a place to safely store excess money and equipment. But even without these tweaks, even without the sophisticated story line and all the cool new features, Diablo 2 is just a great game. The sound, music and graphics combine to create a tantalisingly eerie setting. Players will willingly let their game-playing hours slip well past reasonable bedtimes, suffering bleary-eyed classes and meetings in exchange for "just one more" magic item, dungeon level or character skill.  Rating:  - Oustanding.It may just be me, but I can't seem to get bored of this game. Even when it gets repetitive. It earns a gold medal from me because It's simple to play and very fast to level up. Graphics were great for the time and the storyline takes on from it's predecessor, Diablo. Rating: - THE BEST GAME EVERYou might think It is boring just to walk, kill, walk walk, kill! Well it's not, you have quests, you have loads and loads of items to choose, unique items, rare items, magical items, socketed items, normal items, you have spells and most of all you have your strength and stuff. If you raise your strength, your attack gets higher, your dexeterity and your aiming gets higher, your vitality and your health gets higher, your energy makes you go faster and your mana gets higher. There is loads of different monsters to attack. You can also have item sets which gain you extra bonuses. Rating: - it's well and truly TIMMYTASTICwell my name is timmy mallot and i think diablo 2 is rather TIMMYTASTIC(GOOD)and i think it is enjoyable and great.The thing is in my day(1912) you couldn't get any games like this infact in my day you couldn't get any games at all but my son has this diablo 2 or whatever you call it and one day i decided to play on it and it was fun my my technology these days it really has risen but i think that if anyone is interested in getting diablo 2 you should get on your pushbike ride to a shop and buy it because it is TIMMYTASTIC well im a bit thirsty now i might go to the pub for a pint of boddington's or as i like to call it liquid bread well i'll go now but if you ask me the game shouldn't get any less than 95%. Rating: - Diablo 2 - Like diablo himself - un-beatable.Now, i would not class myself as a fan of role playing games. The fact is though, this is THE BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED. I purchased it around about a year after its release, and i havnt stopped playing it since. The thing that makes this game so great is the fact that it is so open-ended. The maps are never same, no matter how many characters you create. The items you find are completly random, and you always feel that uve worked for an item when its dropped by a particularly hard monster. Another great thing about this game is the monsters, even the easiest monsters to kill can be deadly to your character, (ie, if u have an ice sorceress and you have to fight a monster that is immune to ice. since a sorc is weak you cant blugeon it to death, ... Its full of things to do: getting amazing weapons, poisoning your foe, casueing hell etc. Unlike Diablo 1 it is not based in just 1 little church, there are four places to explore each one with harder enemies and more exciting things to do. There are many types of weapons- Axes, swords, maces, spears, bows and others. and you can get magical weapons whcih make a weapon stronger by adding extra damage or/and giving it fire damage to attacks or/and ice damage to frezze your foe and smash them like a window! or if you've already got a magic weapon and you're happy with that sell it!
