Amazon.co.uk Review: Mixing a wide variety of genres, Dark Cloud gives fans of role-playing games between 30 and 50 hours of quality gameplay. Control Toran and his motley crew as you attempt to reconstruct the world and vanquish the Dark Genie. In addition to hours of dungeon-trekking, the game also contains elements found in simulation, puzzle, fishing, and rhythm games.
The combat system is clearly inspired by the one used in the N64's Legend of Zelda games--choose a target to lock on, and wail away. Between rounds of slaying monsters, you'll have to strategically rebuild cities to advance. Successful fishing trips will lead to valuable weapon upgrades. Some battles test your rhythm, requiring you to match button commands, similar to such games as Um Jammer Lammy and PaRappa the Rapper. Weapon management is a vital part of the game--weapons can break if not cared for properly, but you can also transform them into powerful objects of destruction by shrewdly managing upgrades.
The multifaceted game contains an excellent tutorial to help you learn its many aspects. While it has its imperfections, Dark Cloud is the best PlayStation 2 RPG to date. It's perfect for the angling adventurer who likes to dabble in urban planning. --Raymond M. Padilla, Amazon.com

This is awful! Absolute crud!
I would tell you the story, but I don't know it: the cut scenes are sooo dull and overall drab that I couldn't bear to sit though them! There's some stupid old warrior standing outside a cave and he starts talking. But there isn't even a sound. All that happens is a speech bubble comes out of his head and words slowly appear in it. This is bad enough, but his mouth doesn't even move!
You also run slowly.
When you enter that cave thing nothing happens. All you do is go through several corridors, fighting skeletons that don't do anything when hit and collecting stuff you don't want. When you eventually die (horray!)the screen becomes black then a purple piece of parchment flies ... Read More:

This was the first game I bought with my PS2 back in 2001 and I loved it then. I have recently bought it again on a nostalgia trip and I am surprised at well it compares to the dozens of PS2 RPG games I have played since then. The gameplay is described in other reviews, but I just wanted to comment about repetitiveness. Virtually all games are repetitive to some degree, for instance golf games tend to focus on hitting a ball towards a hole and platformers involve exploration, killing monsters and a bit of puzzle solving. Dark Cloud involves exploring dungeons, killing monsters, building villages, and interacting with characters. The way to stop the inherent structure of the game becoming boring is by adding variety to the different elements and ... Read More:

Let me start by saying this is not as good as it's sequel - Dark Chronicle, which frankly a soul sucking epic of a game ( it stole 75 hrs of my life)
This is a tactical RPG, you play Toan a person of great destiny in a small village thats attacked by the recently risen Dark Genie, You have to collect Altla and rebuild the villages you travel into.
Game play goes as this - You work your way through the numerous levels of the dungeon - normally est 15+, collecting parts to complete your village in the Georama setting.(more on that later).
Now the levels of each dungeon are the same in graphics ONLY!!. - The game engine creates a new layout every single time you enter that level and the levels you've just completed. ... Read More:

... yes, despite all the hype about this title (don't know about the sequel... yet), this is a fairly basic action RPG'ish game, that couldn't possibly appeal to anyone else other than a young child. The basic gameplay revolves around village areas you play around to rebuild (most world towns were wiped out by story events) using parts of the village (houses, mills, objects, and characters) scattered in orbs you collect in each specific village 'dungeon'. Each 'dungeon' is about 10+ floors that you clear one at a time, in pretty much the same way: search door key for next floor. Basic Zelda item play. Eventually you'll die and come back to the village, but you'll be going back and forth endlessly just to re-equip yourself minimally to get back to ... Read More:

The 1st rpg i ever played ,its fantastic i didnt sleep for 2 nights when i first started playing it . It can be a bit Repetitive at times but rebuilding the town and Fulfilling the villagers requests makes the repetitve bits worth while. The game is straight forward and the addition of new Characters while your playing the game adds to the fun 10/10.
