 Rating: - An excellent setI would like to endorse rc_rc's review, in that I am thoroughly enjoying Wand's masterful handling of the complete Symphonies. Reading elsewhere of Wand as being a 'safe pair of hands', I believe the comment does him less than justice. Yes, it is a traditional approach, but one which endeavours throughout to show the beauty as well as the humanity of these works, and in the midst of what seems to be a current vogue of faster tempi in Beethoven, he allows the music to breathe, carefully revealing the subtleties and quality of the compositions. Do consider Wand and the NDR if you are wanting a complete Beethoven set, and don't worry too much about the space they take up on your shelf - they are worth it! Rating: - The best recorded sound in any Beethoven cycle I know. Superb germanic performance.On first listening this Beethoven symphonies cycle is one of the best. The NDR orchestra could fool you into thinking they are the Berlin Phil, and Wand's conducting is like a slightly more humane Karajan. Though the 3rd symphony is not as good as Karajan's electric 1963 cycle (which remains a better overall recommendation than this set) the superb accounts of the other symphonies rival any other set. And the sound is absolutely top-notch, the best sound quality I have heard on any Beethoven symphony cycle, demo-class and then some - clear involving and warm. The only set I could recommend above this one is Karajan's 1963 cycle, gloriously remastered on DG collectors edition boxset. The Wand is likewise a brilliantly played traditional ... Read More: |
