Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: The keys to a successful basketball video game are its controls, artificial intelligence and the pacing of the game. NBA Courtside excels in all these facets, with only a few drawbacks. One is in the defensive AI, which often leaves itself open to dunks and fast breaks and is generally a slouch when it comes to rebounds. This can be remedied with the higher difficulty levels, but that makes the computer a flawless shooter, even from behind the line. The controls are good, but take some getting used to if you've spent a lot of time with other basketball simulations. The c-stick on the controller is used to pass the ball; no button presses are necessary--just point the stick at the desired player and the ball is away. Unfortunately this same system is used to select defensive players, and that can be difficult especially if the action is fast and furious. At least there are plenty of game modes: practice, exhibition, season and even an interesting mode that takes place on top of the roof.
As you might expect, the player models are smooth, crisp and photo-realistic. The animations are detailed and realistic with nary a slowdown or glitch. Even the crowd looks good, and benched players are likewise in full 3-D. The audio isn't so impressive, however, with uninspired and slow commentary; often it seems to be describing plays from another game, or worse, talks about plays that happened 30 seconds prior to the current action. This is not a game breaker, but is definitely not as good as the competition.
Aside from the minor flaws described above, NBA Courtside is still a stellar entry in the basketball fold and an asset for the Nintendo GameCube library. Worth the purchase now, and with a few fixes, it'll be a real contender next year. --Bob Andrews

NBA Courtside is a stunningly average basketball game featuring a comprehensive amount of detail and a reasonable selection of play modes. I found the Arcade mode the most fun, but you need to change the game's speed setting to 'fast' for it to become enjoyable. As far as basketball games go, you could to a lot worse than to pick up a second hand copy of this for under a tenner. Just don't expect the world to be set alight.

NBA courtside had the potential to be a great game with amazing graphics unfortunately it only managed 1 of those things. The only reason I gave the game 2 stars was because of the graphics. The gameplay is appalling, I was bored after just 2 minutes but I carried on for about 20 minutes just in case it got better. Low and behold it didnt. The only thing remotely enjoyable about this game is the 3 point contest. I dont know if all basketball games are this boring but only get this game if you're an extreme basketball fan.

This is a great basketball game, the graphics are amazing, the detail of the players, stadiums and players moves are like nothing I've seen before. I found that the commentary was quiet good compared to that of other sports games it keeps up with whats happening and doesn't get repetative. If you get bored of all the rules then the arcade mode will blow you away, it's fast and furious with plenty of crazy dunks and passes that you will want to replay again and again.

Well., what more can you want from a basketball game? This is my first and only game so far on my gamecube and as far as these kind of games go, it really pretty great. The graphics and game play are both excellent, however nba street on the ps2 which i played a month ago has to take the biscuit. Even though courtside is more reallistic, it is slower and not quite as zany as the ps2 contender. I must say though that it is an immense gaem, but as with all sport games, make sure you have people around to play with you....cussing a little black box over the dunk it just made being 'scabby' really wears thin after a while...

simply amazin cos of all the modes, but i would prefer a different mode than 3 point shoot out, which you cant win. The arcarde mode is just fun, the hot spots bein the main reason, but also all the moves you can do, either wack passes, amazing freestlyin, or simply the phatest dunks around. The graphics are just as good as xbox, so all xbox lovers, uve been had. Just watch out for the Courtside 2k3, cos that will be better cos this one is like its child, and there tryin to get it to work, the next courtside will be out of this world.
