Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: In a year dominated by the World Cup it's inevitable that soccer games by the handful will be released into a market keen to soak up as much footie as possible. Enter Konami's ISS 2, the follow-up to their massively successful International Superstar Soccer on the PS2. Being a follow-up doesn't guarantee success, however, and ISS 2 proves it's possible to take a winning formula and contaminate it with a sprinkling of annoyances that take the shine off a game that promised so much.
The biggest problem stems right from the heart of the gameplay itself. Player control suffers from stop/start movements, meaning a change of direction can result in instant loss of possession as the opposition sweep the ball away while the player under your control hesitates for a second before performing the desired manoeuvre. Get caught by this a couple of times and you'll realise how exasperating it is and how it breaks up the smooth flow of play. Commentary too is weak and lacks the variety and smooth flow of titles such as 2002 FIFA World Cup--turning it off is the only real way forward unless you're in a sadistic mood.
If you can push these issues to one side, the rest of ISS2 is a pretty good effort. Intro screens and menus are comprehensive and easy to use and a wealth of club, national and international sides are presented for your ball-booting pleasure. Action replays are comprehensive and, as has become the norm, can be viewed from hundreds of different angles. Graphically, the game's a treat for the eyes and manages to inject a little humanity into the players (unlike 2002 FIFA World Cup's zombie Beckham, who's more likely to frighten the opposition to death than shimmy round them with a flick of the boot).
All in all, though, ISS 2 feels woolly and below par; the inadequacies of the control system make a real dent in the gameplay, which is very disappointing and takes some of the excitement away--it feels more like radio-controlled football then "being there". For best results stick to 2002 FIFA World Cup or try out Sega's Virtua Striker. --Chris Russell

This game is a lot of fun when playing multiplayer. The gameplay is so basic but this is an advantage. It eradicates the chances of a Pro evo expert winning against a football game virgin. It's hard to get a rhythm with the ball when in possession, meaning you cant just run and score with the same technique like in Pro evo. I thought that Pro evo 3 couldn't be beaten as a multiplayer football game. It's a great development from the classic ISS on the old SNES. The only snag with this game is no club teams. Buy this if you want a good arcade game to play with mates. An absolute bargain here too.

This game HAS to be one of the worst football games ever. Cast your minds back to the 1990s SNES classic, ISS. It had it's flaws - there were lots of unrealistic goals and the challenge mode was nigh impossible at times. BUT, it was fair and so bad in everything that it was awesome - it didn't try to be the best, it just accepted it was pants and thats why we all loved it. Fastforward to 2002, and out pops this version. It's trying to be like the original, and fails badly - its cringe worthy at times. It builds itself up as a realistic simulation of the great game. Its not - to start with, the referee hands out more cards than Rob Stiles, mostly for slight offences. The commentary is not properly syncronised to the game (Lawro: That goal ... Read More:

This is a great game to have! It is fun and there is loads to do in the game! The create player and team is good and the multilayer is excellent! The commentry is a little repetitive at times but thats nothing and the gameplay is easy to get to grips with and its smooth! ISS is still one of the best footy games around today (now PRO EVO SOCCER) but the best was prehaps on the SNES, what fun that was, but this is just as good on the Gamecube and you can now pick it up at a very low cheap price!

It's a pretty average footie game with 1 annoying drawback: it is almost impossible to change control to the player you need. This is great for the attacker but very very annoying for the defending player. Get Fifa 2003 instead.
