Amazon.co.uk Review: If you enjoy fast cars, boats, mobile assault battle-armour, big guns and a bit of property destruction on the side, Red Faction II is the game for you. Red Faction was one of the first and best first-person shooters on the PS2, and this eagerly awaited sequel improves on every aspect of it.
Set a few years after the first game but curiously failing to feature Parker, the hero from the original, Red Faction II casts you as Alias, a nanotech-enhanced soldier out to bring down the Soviet-style Commonwealth that has decided to blight the land in the way that evil dictatorships always seem to in video games.
The primary gimmick of the Red Faction games is the Geo-Mod (geometry modification) graphics engine which allows you to destroy almost any wall, ceiling or floor in order to proceed or simply to just have a bit of a laugh. The biggest problem with the first game was its terrible loading times that really interrupted the flow of the game, but that's been sorted out for this sequel, which also includes improvements to the previously spartan multi-player modes.
As you'd expect there are also lots of new vehicles to drive--including a very natty robotic power suit--plus tons more weapons and even a new Halo-style shield system. Admittedly none of this is terribly original, and the frame rate can stutter on occasion, but it's still lots of fun for red-blooded men and women. --David Jenkins
This review refers to the PlayStation 2 version of the game
Product Description: Featuring an enhanced engine that allows players to strategically alter and destroy the game environment in real-time, Red Faction 2 expands and builds upon the experience and technology of the original game. Defend your country as Alias, a demolitions expert, with the help of five elite squad members, each specialising in their own means of destruction. Fight through diverse levels using vehicles, an arsenal of specialised weapons and explosives in a rampage to overthrow the government. Refined graphics, enhanced enemy AI and dynamic environments are also featured and as well as the main single-player mode there's four-player split-screen action including customisable computer opponents.

For those looking for a slightly stealthier FPS, such as 007 Nightfire, look away now. This game throws you in, all guns blazing. Gameplay: Great fun. The trill of it runs through your body playing this. You wipe out hoards of enemies; turn a corner to find another ten backed up by some sort of helicopter. It can be hard, it can be easy but always worth playing. The lurning curve is not too steep, nor to shallow, after the first mission which is easy it get gradually harder, with you running deep underground, flying helicopters, blowing up bridges, driving tanks etc. The futuristic aspect works well as you have a vast array of weapons from the bog standard pistols to the Nano Grenade Launcher to the havoc wreaking rail gun, ... Red Faction...what a game..Blow up stuff out of bordem, and find that it is the way! Big guns, big enemies, big drill thing that was pointlessly cool..but anyway, what i'm trying to say is that it was one hell of a game, and would need a bloodey good game to live up to it.
Along came Red Faction II.
First impression "Bloodey hell...I just took out that wall.." And so on and so forth for...pretty much teh entire game. I'm not going to be all biased and persuade you to buy it or stay away from it, all i'm saying is that I like it. Some parts are weak, some parts aren't..It like any good game. The weaponary seems endless, with lots of guns, grenades and vehicles you get to play with..It's a fun game.
So...if ... Read More:

The other reviewer must be playing a different game - this is a decent first person shooter, with cool weapons, excellent death match modes, a story mode, good graphics and the whole style of it is dark, moody and quite different to Timesplitters 2 or the other FPS's on the Cube.
On the whole I find that I keep returning to play this, and seeing as you can pick it up really cheap in some places, you can't go wrong - get it second hand, you'll enjoy it.

this game sucks. the first red faction was great. The plot was good, the gamepay was good it was a great game to play. but this game is lacking in all of that. it's set on earth with an unheard of character, what happend to the revolution on MARS? it just a bad game that dosen't live up to the original
