Amazon.co.uk Review:
The Sony MZ-NF810 Net MiniDisc Tuner Walkman offers great looks, a compact design, up to 82 hours battery life, an AM/FM radio and the ability to store over five hours of music on one 80-minute MiniDisc.

MiniDisc technology has come on leaps and bounds these past few years. As the units have become smaller, the battery life and storage capacity have increased. The MZ-NF810 is a compact unit that fits nicely into a pocket or in your hand. The player boasts an LCD display for track listings and other such information, as well as offering all the buttons you'll need to get the most out of the device. For direct audio recording the user has the option of microphone, digital optical and line-in sockets. Those with a PC can connect the MZ-NF810 to their computer via the USB socket.

Connecting the unit to your computer via USB allows you transfer CD audio, MP3, WMA and WAV files using the included SonicStage software. The software converts the audio files into Sony's ATRAC TYPE-S format before transfer. You can also change the audio quality setting to give yourself more music per disc. When it comes to recording, the MZ-NF810 does an admirable job too. With the Quick mode you can have faster queuing and FF/RW speeds in exchange for battery life. The unit also offers a bookmark track function for easy access to relevant recordings.

Listening to your favourite compilation is one thing; having the ability to keep up to date with the latest happenings in the world is another--the MZ-NF810 also features a FM/AM radio.

The MZ-NF810 is powered by a rechargeable Ni-MH battery, which is charged via the included cradle. There is also the option of adding an additional 'AA' type battery via a connectable battery dock. The additional battery dock will be appreciated by those who plan to be away from the charging cradle for any length of time. The remote control also serves as the main conduit to the player, allowing the main unit to be hidden out of sight.

Aesthetics aside, the sound quality is very good. The player comes with six graphic equaliser settings and a virtual surround mode to enhance your listening pleasure. While sounding like a whim, the virtual mode is actually very good and on test, it actually took away that hard edge normally found when listening to music through headphones.

Overall this is a very comprehensive player and delivers the goods. The slim and compact aluminium body does convey a sense of durability and it looks like it could take a few knocks. The ability to add a further battery can be a useful if you're out and about. --Jason Denwood

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - fantastic!
excellent item.. good communication via e-mail.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - excelelnt
this product is a worthy foil to the IPod, and contrary to other reviews the software will tend to run better on higher end computers

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Don't know what they're moaning about
After reading some of the less-than-complementary reviews on here, I was slightly apprehensive about ordering this minidisc player. Thankfully I went ahead with it, and it is now the new love of my life.

The software runs like a dream - after a few minutes, I was transferring music back and forwards with ease and it hasn't crashed yet. For someone who's been operating with analogue recordings for the past few years its a welcome relief!

The manual may look daunting, but even then, after a quick flick through it you know the basics and can just skim to the appropriate section if you get a bit stuck later.

The battery life is as impressive as it says, the sound quality is excellent and the radio works well. ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Certainly worthwhile
The best bit about this player is the look and feel of it, it seems to weigh virtually nothing and sits beautifully in your pocket. The software takes a little getting used to but I don't seem to have had any of the problems that other people have had. It is beautifully simple to transfer cd's to md and mp3's take a little longer but are still quite simple.
The main drawback is the remote control, it is useful in it's design but the buttons seem to be designed to make it impossible to push only one button at a time without pushing several others, several times I have accidentally turned on the radio when trying to get it out of my pocket. The lengths for the wires attaching the player to the remote control and headphones seem to be the ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - damn my fat fingers
Yes its a bit fiddly but when everything goes micro like this you have to compromise.
I didn't have a problem with the software, it seemed straightforward to me. That is, until I tried to shift MP3 files from my pc. They obviously don't like each other or the software doesn't like me. 'Checking Out' from pc onto minidisc is easy and 3 or 4 tracks kind of trickle through at the same time, if you are recording whole albums. LP2 sounds perfectly good, haven't tried LP4 yet. Means you can get 160 or 320 minutes onto a disc respectively. Have discarded the remote as it is designed to perch out of a shirt pocket and so looks like a short but very fat biro. This would appear to be the radio so might be good to keep it handy about your person.
