Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: Create and play CD-Rs containing up to 30 CDs with Sony's new D-NE511 ATRAC/MP3 CD Walkman. The Sony D-NE511 looks like any other CD player; there are numerous buttons on the front, a two-line LCD screen and the usual d-pad for playing, skipping and stopping the tracks. Although in reality this is far from the truth as the CD player has the ability to play both standard audio CDs and specifically burned CDR/RWs. Using Sony's proprietary PC software, SonicStage Simple Burner and a CD writer on your PC, tracks can be burned on a CD-R/RW using either Sony's ATRAC3plus or ATRAC3 formats.
Taking either CD or MP3 files, tracks can be compressed by up to 1/20th of there original size depending on the quality setting you chose. Music can be burned and compressed to 132, 105, 66, 64 or 48 kbps (kilobits per second) and compressing at 48 kbps, will allow you to record up to 490 songs (about 30 CDs) on a single 700 MB disc. Track information is provided via an Internet connection to Gracenote CDDB before burning and this information will then appear on the LCD display when you play the track.
Sound obviously varies according to the level at which you record it. CD-quality MP3s are normally recorded at 128 kbps and at this ratio you are still able to get some 170/180 tracks per CD--slightly more than the 13 or 14 you normally find. The unit is powered by two "AA" type batteries and will run for around 50 hours. And for the fashion-coconscious the player comes in three different colours: blue, red and silver.
While the device's reliance on Sony will be annoying to some, it doesn't take away the fact that you've got a great music player that produces very good music for a very affordable price. --Jason Denwood

I bought this cd player recently and I'm very pleased with it. The sound quality is good and it's easy to use. The only annoying thing I've come across so far is the bleeping every time you press a button, but there are instructions in the manual so you can disable that function. There have been a few criticisms in these reviews of the volume on this model, that it's restrictive and can't be turned loud enough. I've tried playing many different styles of music on my player (including classical), not particularly quietly, without even reaching the halfway mark on the volume control. I don't think it's any different to any of the other models I've owned in that respect, and I certainly don't find that it's a problem or spoils my enjoyment of the ... Read More:

I have purchased a number of Sony items over the years, including other Atrac CD/MD/ Network Walkman products, and had no reservations about buying this particular model. For the price, it is a superb performer, with a very clear and detailed sound, which belies the Atrac compression. To be able to get 30+ CD's worth of music on to one blank CD-R is a major bonus, particularly for motorists- obviously without the need to keep changing discs every few hours. It's far better than a CD auto changer in that respect. Coupled with a cassette adaptor kit and cigar lighter connection (or even using rechargable batteries) it couldn't be simpler to install and use.
Although many people have criticised Sony for the way that the Sonic Stage software ... Read More:

I'd have to say....this is one of my favourite Portable CD players I have owned. The sound quality is crisp and clear, while the portablility is descent as well. It is however a dedicated portable CD player......meaning no line out for those who would like to make it their mini Hi-Fi and connect their speakers. Okay, yes, you can connect the them via the headphone socket, but the max volume output is soo rediculously low you might as well just stick in earphones. As for the functions.....the Jog Dial is aalright but can be very annoying when keeping it in your jacket at school whilst listening to a track in class, and when you need to turn it off or switch the tracks you realize the jog-dial menu is up. But, that is very unlikely to happen. All ... Read More:

This is a great piece of kit. I bought it before embarking on a backpacking trip because I wanted to bring as much music with me as possible, and being able to create ATRAC/MP3 discs was a huge advantage. With ATRAC, I used the best quality sample rate & still got around 10 standard Cd's per 800Mb disc.
The player is as easy to use as other Sony CD players, the sound quality is excellent (although the sample rate for some ATRAC & MP3 albums can affect this) and the display is handy. Not only does it display track information for encoded CD's, it also displays information for certain music CD's (especially those from the Sony/Columbia stable!).
Another advantage is that its quite a solid model, I've lost count of how ... Read More:

i bought this player a while ago, and i'm am nothing but pleased so far, origionally i was looking for an MP3 player, but this is a GREAT alternate, altho i have not tested the software that comes with it, i used Nero6 express.. the quality good, i heard someone say about the earphones supplied were not loud enough, but i use some from my old player anyway. overall i think this is a great player at a really decent price, in my opinion totally worth buying! (its great to have a few hundred songs on one CD and battery power last very long!)
