Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: Expecting your standard Tony Hawk's sequel? Think again. This time the developers have come up with a different slant and have achieved something really significant.
The idea this time round is that you start off on the streets with nothing but your board to keep you company. Start skating around, pulling off tricks and sooner or later you'll be spotted; then you start to make your way up the boarding world. That's easier said than done, of course, with a bigger selection of tricks to learn and pull off. The upshot though is that the game presents a high quality, long-term challenge as you slowly make your way to the top.
Something that doesn't work quite as well is the ability to pick up your board and explore on foot. It's theoretically supposed to make things more flexible, but ultimately accounts for the game's few slower moments. However, ultimately Tony Hawk's Underground works spectacularly well. Its gameplay is sublime, the multi-player modes are dangerously addictive and it scores immensely in the value for money stakes too. Easily one of the most playable games on any console out there, it holds appeal for gamers at all levels of experience. --Simon Brew
NGC Magazine: "A big game with some great new additions that will keep things feeling fresh."
Manufacturer's Description: Get ready for a totally new breed of the Tony Hawk experience--Tony Hawk's Underground. Play as yourself, not a pro skater, and make your way through a plot-twisting, true-to-life story that takes you from unknown local skate punk to fame and fortune as a superstar skater. For the first time ever, you'll be able to get off your board and explore nine expansive levels on foot or by vehicle. Enjoy unprecedented customisation by designing and naming your own original tricks through the all-new Create-a-Trick. Or create bigger parks and include your own goals in the expanded Skate Park Editor.

All said and done the actual format of the THPS games can never change that much, they are limited to the confines of a skateboard afterall, However, Activision (the team behind the games) always manages to give each competitor in the series a fresh outlook. This might be new tricks, hidden unlockables, more levels, skaters etc. This time around they have really gone all out on changing the format.
Gone is the standard level to level progression you have come to expect so now enters the all new "story mode". Story mode had been billed by Activision as the biggest breakthrough since GTA went 3D, mmmmmm maybe not, it does manage to boot the old format up the behind enough for things to change enough to make it fresh though and for ... I love the Tony Hawk's series, and this game doesn't make me want to stop! It is brilliant, the levels are much better, and interactive. The graphics are good, and as usual, the music is spot on! the sound track is defineatley a highlight of the game. It includes: the Clash, Queens of the stone age, Bad religion, the Hellacopters, Super joint ritual, and 3 (3!!) tracks by Kiss (as well as a Kiss themed level, and Gene Simons as a bonus skater, quite a treat for kiss fans, then!). The game is much more realistic (you can get of your board!), and for the first time ever, features a plot (story mode). The only let down of the game is: the driving parts. Where this should be the best new feature, it just isn't believable. Riddled with glitches, ... Read More:

Tony Hawk's games have always been the same. You are dropped in a themed level and you skate around doing different goals. It started to change though when in Tony Hawks 4, instead of having a 2 minute time limit to do a set number of goals, you had as much time as you wanted to skate around then you could, in your own time find someone who gave you an objective. This really brought a whole new dimension to the Tony Hawk's saga. ENTER: Tony Hawks Underground This game is an even bigger change from the last one. In fact the only real similarity is that you have to skate in a career mode....but no.....you don't even have to skate anymore. You can get off your board at will and climb up buildings to find new areas. ... Read More:

THUG is the best yet as it mixes old with new. when i played it for the first time i was amazed it still as good as ever if not better. The ability to create your own tricks and decks is a great idea. the driving sections however are a bit of a let down but are fun none the less.
