In Echoes, what you get is a relaxing and reflective collection of piano music which is truly excellent. Einaudi is not producing music of any particular genre, but the closest I would say it comes to is 'ambient' rather than 'classical'. I think to treat it as classical would be a bit off the mark.
People have talked about it as background music and it's an album where you can pay attention and enjoy it or just choose to let it pass by you. If you travel or commute a lot, you'll find this album to be essential. Highlights are Le Onde, African Melody III, The Days and Odd Days but there's plenty of excellent tracks to be found on here. Only 'Calmo' seems to be a bit pointless.
Echoes is one of the most relaxing albums ... Read More:

I love piano music and after hearing one of the tracks on Classic FM was determined to buy a copy of this CD. I was looking forward to listening to it but after the first three tracks I started to feel disappointed. Einaudi is best listened to in isolation - ie on Classic FM. An entire CD of his is pretty boring and rather depressing to be honest. There is little differentiation from one song to the next: most are solemn, ponderous, many are written in 3/4 time giving the impression of a long waltz. I think hearing a track on the radio amongst other music does Einaudi's music more justice but he needs to vary the tone, the rhythm, and the mood of his pieces more, in my opinion, to be considered a composer of any real worth or value. Someone else ... Read More:

Einaudi's music is truly unique... subtle and calming. I imagine it'd take that certain 'ear/heart' to appreciate his blend of music. First time I heard Ludovico's music was in a taxi in rural Sussex (odd, I know), and don't recall anything else about my journey. I've since got myself 3 CDs from his collection, and whilst it's difficult to choose a favourite, I Giorni's still an all time heart-stopper for me. His music's worth a try... especially whilst working, driving, or ambient music at dinner or heart-to-heart chats.

What do people see in this man's music? It could have been written better by a bored music student teenager. It has no direction, there's no musical development in it, it doesn't have the quirky but intelligent simplicity of Satie, and it's over-rated and over-exposed. Sorry, but Einaudi is rubbish.

it's pleasant easy listening but it is repetitive and simple; broken by the occasional incongruous drop outs. Background music for eating/ reading to....
