 Rating: - PROFILES OF BACHMy appreciation of the infinite musical genius of Bach only gains from hearing him interpreted by different artists. I already owned two formidable accounts of cantata 82, one from the great tenor Ian Bostridge in his debut disc, the other from a great bass (the work was originally written for a bass soloist) John Shirley-Quirk. Shirley-Quirk's performance dates from 1965, but he performs with the Academy of St Martin's under Marriner, and they were already committed to an `authentic' style in Bach and Handel. The authentic movement rapidly became `still more authentic' in the hands of, say, McCreesh, but Bostridge and Europa Galante in 2000, and now Hunt Lieberson with her Boston associates two years later, have settled for much the same style ... Read More: Rating: - Compelling, moving, beautifulI think that thse cantatas are normally performed by a tenor, but the mezzo Lorraine Hunt Lieberson gives a very moving performance of these two cantatas: powerful communication with the listener / audience is one mark of a great artist, and she has shown this consistently for as long as she has been in the public eye. Cantata 82 (Translated: "It is enough") has special power as she had just lost her younger sister to lung cancer. Craig Smith and the orchestra of Emmanuel Music are a very very experienced and sound Bach team, and their performance is excellent. For me this CD has special value, now that Lorraine Hunt Lieberson herself has died (also cancer) so tragically early. Even if you have other copies of these ... Read More: Rating: - SublimeLorraine Hunt Lieberson couldnt put a foot wrong if she tried, - whether in Bach and Handel or in Mozart opera or very contemporary works. Everything she does is full of character but absolutely faithful to the music, and so it is here. My fellow-North-Yorkshireman (see review below) is spot on about Cantata 82 but Cantata 199 is just as beautiful and here sung better than I've ever heard it on record. Accompaniments are excellent and Nonesuch's engineering very good (I hope they might eventually release it on SACD if they recorded in hi-definition as they often do). A sublime disc from a sublime mezzo. Rating: - Hearbreakingly beautifullI have several recordings of BMV 82 and this is the best. If this doesn't bring a tear to your eye then there is something wrong with you. |
