 Rating:  - Great first train set for little Thomas fansI have a 20 month old little Thomas fan in my family, and he had this for Christmas. It was really well-received! Amazon's pictures don't make very clear what you actually get in the box. There is sufficient track to make the layout shown on the box (an oval shape, which another smaller shape within it). Trains can be sent in different directions by changing the points which is quite fun. There is a station, and then there are three little pull back engines. When I bought this, I couldn't quite envisage how this would work, but quite simply, all you do is pull them backwards along the track, this seems to 'wind up' the mechanism inside and then the trains will run along the track for at least a circuit or two of the track. My son found it difficult at first, but with the help of his elder train obsessed brother he soon grasped the idea! This is something they can play for ages. I am worried that this confusion will put off potential purchases by parents for their younger children. We were put off until we noticed this product in a shop on the high street and realised that the age information given here is wrong. There is another important point to consider: even though this product is called “Tomy Thomas Motor Road & Rail - Pull Back 'N' Go Train Set” this toy does not have any motor road components, only rail components. As the name suggests it's a pull-back set, if the kids you're buying it for are happy to do that then great but my little nephews soon lost interest doing that! I'd probably have been better off getting the 'medium' battery set that can be had for similar money. The great thing though is that the track is compatible with the battery trains and accessories so you can always add a powered train afterwards if you wish. The set comes in a sturdy box and consists of 3 engines, track sections, a station and platform, and a tunnel. All the pieces are robust and well-made, and look likely to stand a lot of handling. The trains are the pull-back-and-go type, and they go rather well - they will all do 3 complete circuits of the track before coming to a stop. I actually prefer this to the battery-powered type of toy train. With those, not only are you constantly replacing the batteries, but there also isn't much for the child to actually do except watch the train go round and round.
