I purchased it from Boots at 19 weeks pregnant hoping that I would be lucky enough to hear baby's heartbeat early on (the box suggests that it will usually work from around 21 weeks), no such luck. I have been periodically checking (for hours at a time!) hoping I will hear something other than my own heartbeat and digestive gurgling, and now at 28 weeks pregnant I have returned it to Boots for a refund. I did hear baby kick and fidget which was rather nice, but I purchased it to hear baby's heartbeat and it didn't live up to expectations. The instructions contained within the box state that depending on the size of the mummy, it can take from between 21 weeks ... The instructions say you can't pick up the baby's heartbeat until around 21 weeks which was pretty much spot on - we didn't pick the baby's heartbeat until around 22 weeks. It's pretty easy to give up on the listener, as it can be frustrating trying to find the baby's heartbeat the first few times. The trick is positioning the listener correctly, listening for a bit, and trying again until you find the right spot. Once you've found the right spot you can pretty much pick it up all of the time. It does help if you keep lie back and completely still, because the device, which is basically a very sensitive microphone, picks up any other sound like the earphone cable ... Bought it a day short of my 24 week stage.. and could only hear kicks at a very low volume and the product crackles as u move the earphone wire. After a good 3 (half hour) sessions of waiting for the baby 2 maybe change position as i thought this could be the problem...NOTHING. ended up going to my room away from all the noise and closed the windows..2 find the tinyest heartbeat only when i dug the actual earphones into my lobes. Rating: - A totally useless piece of kitI purchased this item when my Wife was 18 weeks pregnant, three weeks shy of the recommended 21 weeks. At that stage, there was no real sound, except the rumbles of my Wife's stomach and the odd kick from baby. Tried it again at 21 weeks, hoping that because the baby would be bigger I would finally get to hear our little one's heartbeat, but again all we were picking up were rumbles and the odd thump when baby kicked. Tried it again 5 weeks later - same result. We are now 38 weeks pregnant but this system still doesn't pick up baby's heartbeat. The bottom line is that this device simply isn't powerful enough to pick up such sounds. The most you will hear are the odd thumps when baby kicks or moves.
