This was one of my favourite games growing up. Now as a mum, my 6 and 8 year have discovered this game and really love it too. It is very simple to pick up and have a quick game and it really brings out the competitive edge between the adults and children. Children have just as much chance as winning and you don't have to do the usual 'pretend to lose' as an adult to maintain peace relations in the house.
It is educational as children have a hand of cards and have to match shapes or numbers to the game pile, they also have a 'decision' to make when they get one of the magic whot cards in choosing which shape to change to next (the theory is they choose a shape they have most cards with), they also have to pick up cards if they ... Having played Uno for years, I read the reviews of this game and thought it would be a fun variation. However, I found it to be not a patch on Uno and essentially deadly dull. Perhaps there is a way to make it more interesting, but my daughter and I, after an evening of experimentation could not find it. Suggestions on a postcard please... To those that don't own it yet, don't bother, go for Uno.

The simple games are the best, and this one ranks right up there with Uno in our house. The rules are simple, but the joy I am currently getting from it is the fact that I can play it with my 3 year old daughter.
Granted, we have to play with the cards out on the floor, so the secrecy is lost (for the parents at any rate), and yes, we've had to christen the "Whot" card the "magic card", but for a child who is genuinely interested in shapes and numbers, this is the perfect game to kill half an hour of a rainy day. And it's educational.
And because she is only 3, everyone wins at the end of the game!

Recently rediscovered 'Whot' when my mother brought her original version on holiday and it filled in many little spaces (ie 3 games with Dad whilst Mum gets tea on the table - 4 games with Mum whilst Dad makes the picnic lunch etc) Every reception class should have a set for rainy days, the kids think they are playing but are busy learning all the time too, shape recognition, numbers, and tactics/planning all in one little card game. Brilliant

How come I never knew about this? We went on holiday a few weeks ago and stopped off at a friend's house. Within minutes their 3 year old son had taught my 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son to play this. When we arrived at our cottage we discovered a pile of games and Whot! was amongst them. Given the rain we played it nonstop all week - a slightly simpler version without scoring and with displaying the cards for the children - and then each evening the 5 adults played it for hours... It's great. I am definitely going to purchase a box for our use at home. I reckon it can be played with minimal help from 2 and with no help from about 4 yet it still has great value for adults too. I can't believe I've only just discovered it.
