This disc was a birthday present from a friend. I'll leave aside the issue of what kind of friend purchases a requiem for a birthday present, but I think it's important to say that I had not consciously listened to any of Karl Jenkins's music before I was given this CD. I understand that there is a kind of snobbery concerning the popular Jenkins - the Oxford Concise Dictionary of Music briskly moves non-stop from the seventeenth-century cavalier composer John Jenkins to US conductor Newell Jenkins - so there may be something in this, but listening to this CD made it clear that Karl Jenkins certainly has talent. Perhaps it is the self-promotional aspect of his activities that rubs people up the wrong way. For instance, on the informative sleeve ... Read More:

I heard the Introit on Classic FM, thought it very nice, but I am completely stunned by how fresh and marvellous this music is. The contrast of the delicate haikus with the sometimes boisterous and uplifting 'standard' requiem pieces is to be heard to be believed. What a wonderful discovery this is, coming from an old 'Soft Machine' band member. That group was certainly something special, but few today can write with this freshness and clarity. This is music I wish I could have written myself. The best thing I have heard for a very long time.If you read this, please give it a try, as you cannot possibly regret it. This is subtle, heavenly music, but with great clarity, energy and enormous emotion.

As a fan of Adiemus and The Armed Man I bought this CD and immediately dismissed it as not up to his previous standards. Last weekend I went to hear The Armed Man performed live in Liverpool, and was immediately struck by parts in this score I hadn't previous noticed or appreciated. With this in mind I decided to give this CD another chance. I can only say that I am so glad I did for I have played it over several times and am really warming to it. I urge those who have dismissed this work as inferior, do as I have done, and give it another listen - you may be surprised!

I have struggled to listen to this whole CD as it is so awful. The pieces are unimaginative and the voices grating. The 2 star rating is for the Japanese sections which do something to redeem the whole.

At least a beatiful contemporary requiem, without unuseful dissonances or heart anguish for listeners! Here I find sorrow, crying souls, deep sadness...but everything is noble and direct to everybody's heart! I remember Jenkins as Soft Machine's keyboardist...then Adiemus (great first and third albums!)..now a good modern composer, with a great harmonic knowledge and a superb sense of measure! Really great and moving...I'm a chorus master...how would I like to teach music like this to my chorus! Thanks,Karl!!
