Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Preview:
Purposefully held over to take full advantage of next generation PC graphics cards and the new consoles, this latest sequel in the Unreal Tournament series is looking to set new standards for multiplayer first person shoot ‘em-ups. Considering developer Epic Games’ Unreal graphics technology is used by so many other companies you always know a new Unreal Tournament game is going to look good. There’s tons of new features beyond just eye candy here though, including a whole new game mode called Warfare, which works like a combination of the existing Assault and Onslaught modes, with more involved mission goals that make team play absolutely essential to success.

As you’d expect there’s a hanger full of new vehicles and weapons including some nifty hoverboards for when you’re just on-foot and a number of new robot mechs for you to drive; all with varying numbers of legs including tripods and four-legged walkers. The enormous Leviathan tank is particularly impressive, with four independently manned turrets and a giant energy weapon.

Considerable work has also gone into providing the game with a decent single player mode, never one of the series’ highlights, with newly improved artificial intelligence that allows you to simulate a multiplayer game properly even when you’re playing on your own. User created modifications (mods) will also continue to play a hugely important part in the game’s success with the game shipping with a new version of the Unreal Editor for both PCs and consoles. After a quiet 2006, it seems like 2007 is going to be the best year ever for PC gamers.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Nice for the first few hours.
This game differs a lot from it's predecessors. As an example, a lot of the game modes from the previous Unreal Tournaments have been simply thrown out which spoils the fun a bit in my opinion. Cutting out game modes like Invasion really dissapointed me when I first ran the game. That being said, the introduction of a different plot made me interested at first. After time though, the fun seemed to wash away as playing the same games on slighty different maps killing the same people over and over gets a little repetitive. Sure. it's great fun for one-offs like if you're bored and looking to kill half an hour but I can't recommend it for constant playing. What happened to Invasion? Sheesh.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Epic games create an Epic masterpeice.
Having followed the Unreal Tournament series right up until now I have been blown away at the sheer scale of mass destruction and death that trademarks these games.

This latest instalment has been yet another success. Never before have I actually considered the fact that the PC may actually be capable of realistic graphics, having been an extreme Xbox 360 gamer for a good year an a half until a few weeks ago when I made that big push and bought a £2,000 PC to run the latest games. This game came with the PC and I can say it was worth every penny just to play this game.

The graphics are beyond what I expected. I made a comparison between this and Call of Duty 4 (the leading game in `realistic graphics'). I got my ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Superb
This was the first UT game I've played, so I can't really compare it to other games in the series. However, I've been extremely happy with it.

First of all, the graphics are amazing. Not as good as Crysis (obviously), but they are great. Unfortunately, you'll need a good computer to run them at full capacity, and I don't have one. I'm currently on the in-between setting, and it's quality is about the same as Halo 2, which is pretty good. I did however try to run it at 5, and through the slowness of my PC, I noticed it's better than a lot of console games, notably the PS3 version of this game, which is disappointing for the PS3, since it has so much potential. I have yet to see the 360 version though, and I ordered it and am currently ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Speedy, action packed matches, back to the old school.
Finally, a shooter that sticks to its roots.

Who needs hardcore, hashed-up, quasi story themed FPS' when you have something as intense and fun-filled and at the same time - glistening with current technology models, lighting and physics.
Yummy.

Ok... so the menu system is terrible... the options a bit limited... but overall, hey, it's a great game.

And for a tenner...?!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Looks pretty, but dumbed down for consoles - buy UT2004 instead
UT3 looks pretty, but we need more than that. It's been dumbed-down, presumably for console players. Millions of $s and years are spent on making a new game - but the developers can't be bothered to make two interfaces, one for consoles and on PCs? Amazing. Save your money, and instead buy a copy of Unreal Tournament 2004. The old UT2004 is still, even in 2008, three times the game that UT3 is, and is still about the most fast-paced fun you can get in any game that isn't one of the Pro Pinball titles. The graphics in UT2004 are not as slick as UT3, but play UT2004 on a good 24" LCD at 1920 x 1200px, and tweak your Nvidia control-panel settings a little, and the graphics still hold up well. You'll also find thousands still playing UT2004 in multiplayer, ... Read More:
