First things first, i've always been a Tekken fan. SoulCalibur too but that has weapons so i don't put it in the same fighter bracket.
I understand that many people regard the Virtua Fighter series quite highly and as a seasoned gamer i thought it was about time i expanded my beat 'em horizons.
I've enjoyed many, many hours of Tekken with my friends sat around a play station. But VF5 wasn't enjoyable at all. I'm not labelling it a bad game, it blatantly isn't cause people keep making them and fans keep buying them. I just didn't enjoy this.
My main problem is probably that i hadn't played the older ones and picked up the battle system. The learning curve seemed very steep and i wasn't prepared to learn ... Read More:

Visually pretty, the main mode (quest) is repetitive.
This silky looking game is very much linear with a total lack of depth compared to say Soul Calibre, Dead or a live or tekken. What seems to be a very basic button mashing arcade game has been poorely ported over, hardly expanding on the original concept.
Once you've played this game for 10 minutes, you've played it all.

It's interesting that in fighting games all the FX's used in the opening sequences and replays are lost in the near 2D fighting view but that's just how the genre is.
Apart from that, everything that is VF remains. It's the fighter that does not respond well to button-mashing or pressing any old button and hoping for the best. Here you learn the combo's and while that doesn't mean immediate fun it does mean when you outsmart someone with a well timed attack its all the more satisfying.
Let's just hope for more modes and combatants next time as 17 is a little on the small side.

Firstly if you don't like the beat'em up genre this game will not change your mind. I am a huge fan of beat em ups; I have played Tekken's 1-5, soul blade/calibur 1, 2 & 3, capcom vs snk 2 and virtua fighter 4 amongst others.
Virtua fighter 5 is easily one of the best fighting games iv'e played. The only downside is its quite intimidating for begginers, as the helpfull tutorial style training from previous virtua's is missing from this game. The play is smooth and fast paced and it is a technical masterpiece that is briliant to play.Me and my friend had more than 120 matches in one sitting; its that good!
If you've never played vf5 before i would recommend you buy VF4 Evolution as it contains helpful tuorials essential ... Read More:

Sadly not what I expected, it's a lot slower than I'm used to and relied a lot more on learning all the moves and performing counter attacks.
Granted, this makes for a much more strategic beat-em-up, but it also makes for a less user friendly and less jump in and play fighting game. The learning curve is high and it takes a while to get going, you won't be able to progress with simple button bashing, nor will you be able to create some fancy looking moves. I'd suggest picking a character and learning some more of the attacks and blocks to get the most out fo the game before you go jumping in expecting a Tekken style fighter.
This all said, it's not a bad game, well worth playing for those who enjoy a deeper challenge from the ... Read More:
