Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
In the liner notes of Sloe Gin, emerging guitar great Joe Bonamassa explains that one of his objectives is to experiment with acoustic elements he first encountered while listening to Rod Stewart's earliest work. "I think the heavy blues and acoustic mix well together," he writes, and the inviting variety of the disc's 11 tracks--from the rousing electric rave-up of the title track to the closing, tabla-propelled acoustic instrumental--persuasively underscores his point. Bonamassa is a major talent with a growing following, and as his fan base inevitably expands it may become difficult for him to keep everyone happy. Hardcore blues devotees no doubt will yearn for Bonamassa to stay perpetually plugged in, but in the long term that would be a disservice to his broad range of skills. Bonamassa rocks formidably and convincingly on "Dirt in My Pocket" (a bristling original composition), the title track (well suited for air guitar), and his Clapton-esque rendering of John Mayall's "Another Kind of Love." Yet his softer works suggest that he sounds a little more comfortable and natural--vocally, at least--on the acoustic tracks. His retooled version of "Around the Bend" (his first take on this original composition is found on an earlier release) is an engaging, pastoral gem, and his paean to his upstate New York home ("Richmond") is perhaps this disc's most memorable selection. Bonamassa knows the blues (at the time of this release, he was the youngest member on the board of the Blues Foundation), but he also knows how to rock and how to sagaciously, artfully ease off the gas. --Terry Wood

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Guitar Great in the Making!
I recently picked up on Joe Bonnamassa and was well impressed with what I heard!.
For me , his style evokes a lot of the blues-rock greats of yesteryear who switched from acoustic to electric with equally great results, Rory Gallagher, Jimmy Page , also those from the "Power Trios" of the late 60's - early 70's - hello Cream , ZZ Top!.
The 70's blues-rock influences are much in evidence, with covers from Bad Co , and John Martyn's "Easy Blues" , entitled " Jelly Roll " here, given an acoustic take ( yes , Martyn could rock out with the best of them , back in the day!) ,Bonnamassa also successfully covers Chris Whitley's 'Ball Peen Hammer' from the 90's , whatever happened to him?.
I love the version of "Black Night", which ... Read More:

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Are we listening to the same guy ?
I agree with Musicman. I bought Sloe Gin after reading the glowing reviews here and thinking I'd take a chance but I was seriously disappointed. Most of it is moody rather than blues, tending either to the heavy and overblown or the colourless and derivative - often in the same song, probably in the name of 'dynamics'.

Joe is obviously not a bad guitarist but he's nowhere near the brilliance claimed for him and on this showing his take on blues rock is weighted 90-10 in favour of the latter, with his slide playing in particular sounding very ordinary. Indeed, arguably the only 'proper' blues on the record is Joe's cover of Charles Brown's 'Black night', which sounds more than a little like the late Jeff Healey...only not quite as good. ... Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - your usual 12 bar blues
Joe is a skilled guitarist and certainly puts some soul into his lengthy guitar solos. I'd recommend this album as well as The Mustangs albums,Nothing Stays The Same and "Split Decision". And if at all possible, experience the music from these blues influenced folk live-by far the most sureal experience.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Not as good as this lot say it is
I have nothing against dear old Joe but twenty-seven five star reviews? Come on. I only write this to refute that hype really. I got hold of this album after reading the said rave testaments and have to say the songs are cliched and predictable and Joe isn't anywhere near as good a guitar player as everyone is chuffing on about. The solo's are long and tiresome and he really does not compare with somebody like Jeff Healey or SRV.
I recommend purchasing 'See The Light' by Mr Healey or 'Texas Flood' by SRV if you REALLY want to hear outstanding blues guitar playing.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Raw Talent
What a fantastic introduction to Bonamassa's work. I bought this on the strength of some of the reviews on Amazon - it just goes to show their worthiness. This truely is an amazing slab of guitar work and I've been touting Bonamassa's talents to anyone who will listen (and John Mayer's too actually..)
The title track is the one that stands out for me. How this chap isn't more notorious, I don't know.
