Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --Robert Horton Customer Reviews

 Rating: - Can I borrow the suit ?This is a proper superhero movie . Downey plays a blinder as the bad guy turned good . What I liked about this film is it just lets you think you can catch your breath then it hits you with another action sequence . And its all action from start to finish . Bring on the sequel......... Rating:  - Any Old IronRobert Downey Jr is excellent as Tony Stark, the playboy and genius behind the leading US weapons corporation. He's humorous and likeable, and his epiphany regarding the misuse of weapons he's helped develop is an interesting departure from the usual right-wing flag-waving in these movies. While there was plenty to like in this - all the performances are good, and even Gwyneth Paltrow is watchable - the action set-pieces never quite fire on all cylinders, and the sequence where Stark is imprisoned for months and builds Iron Man without his captors realizing is a ludicrous insult to the credibiity of even the dumbest audience. Rating:  - Dominant Downey Jr in Interesting Iron ManAfter a life threatening run in with a group of terrorists, weapons maker Tony Stark (Downey) sets to work on a new weapon. After Marvel comics Spider-Man and Incredible Hulk were made into blockbuster smash hits, the trend grew with another infamous comic book being adapted and based on Stan Lee's series; this is a very effective exciting Sci-Fi thriller. Robert Downey Jr (Chaplin) stars as weapons genius Tony Stark, an intelligent man with a professional life. At times films can have a central hero with a bizarre under-explained background but Favreau dives into Stark's life before Iron Man by projecting a simplistic idea into the opening scenes. Iron Man is the first film to be funded solely by Marvel and if it is anything to go by then the future of Marvel characters on the big screen is definitely looking up. Iron Man is the story of Tony Stark, a multimillionaire arms manufacture whose world view is changed after he is kidnapped by terrorists who want him to build weapons for them. Nonce he escapes he decides to build himself a suit of high-tech armour with which he can change the world. As origin films go this is definitely one of the best with only Batman Begins being better. The film has some truly stunning ... Read More: Rating: - After the bad spiderman and superman films, finally a comic book adaptation that pleases the fans.This is how a comic book adaptation should be made .... nevermind the mediocre 'spiderman' series of movies and 'superman returns' movie (which were both chick-flicks and nothing much more). Iron Man on the otherhand is excellent and keeps faith with the character and the comic book. This film isnt overly stuffed with unecessary romance (such as superman and spiderman)... instead this film is fantastic viewing from beginning to end. Robert Downey Jnr give the character of Tony Stark a huge amount of charisma and charm, as well as being somewhat of an egotistical show-off. Its good to see the film makers actually giving the comic book fans exactly what they want. |
