Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - DEFINITIONS Book thief; 1. person who steals books 2. young girl saved by words.
Marcus Zusak is a literary genius and his talent for writing shines magnificently in this book. If you are having any doubts about buying this book I am here to tell you that if you didn't, you would miss out on this years greatest book! This tale of love and loss is spun breathtakingly into a truly magnifcent novel. And if you thought a book narrated by death would be captivating and breathtaking then you were right. Lisel Meminger is a young German girl growing up in the heart of Nazi Germany. With her brother recently deceased and her mother leaving her to foster parents Liesels life is changed forever. And in this confused chaos begins her love affair with book, starting with 'The Gravediggers Handbook'. With the help of her foster father Liesel learns to read and is soon stealing book wherever she can spurred on by her best friend Rudy. However things never stay the same and when Liesels foster parents hide a Jew in their basement her life changes forever, both for the better, and the worse. Narrated by death , Markus Zusak has given us one of the 'most enduring stories of our time.'

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A brilliant book.
I don't think I've ever written a review on Amazon before, but having just finished this book, I felt I had to. It was just SO good. It really captured my imagination. I read the last few chapters on a translantic flight and couldn't stop crying, so much so, a steward stopped to ask if I was OK. Saying that, it's not a depressing book at all - yes, it has it's sad moments, but it has wonderful joyeous moments as well. Read it. You won't be disappointed.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - 'The Book Thief' stole my heart!
You wouldn't think that a book set in the heart of Nazi Germany would be so beautiful, moving...so life-affirming, but it really was. It was unique, mesmerising, sad, and beautiful, and I couldn't recommend it enough!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - And now for something completely different
You might think that a book narrated by Death would not make it to the top of the bestseller list. You'd be wrong. This great read is like a crosse between some Anne Frank story gone wrong and the movie "The Pianist."

We, the gentle reader, are taken by the hand and led through this marvelous tale of a young girl, Liesel, who gets her books from gravediggers who are burying her younger brother. She also gets them from Nazi book burnings. As if this weren't enough to get you rattled and drawn in, consider this: The narration is sublime and shocking. The details are original and refreshing. The writing is superb. And you will come away from this book with a new look at death and what it means.

A highly charged tale with a great deal of humour and black comedy, THE BOOK THIEF is one of three great reads I've recently come across, the other two being THIS CHARMING MAN (not what you'd think and NOT chick lit) and Koontz's BROTHER ODD, which is his best effort yet.

THE BOOK THIEF ranks up there with the great novels that have stood the test of time. This one will be around for years to come. Don't miss it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A wondeful read
I actually borrowed this book from a friend.
And I must say new books don't entirely appeal to me; I don't know what I am letting myself in for or what I may enjoy or hate. This book opened my eyes.
Many people would call me pessimistic for so easily relating to Death, his use of colours in the opening chapter is close to wonderful. This is a true touching and wonderful portrayal of the torture, torment and the suspicion of living in Nazi Germany during WW2. However what sets this book apart is its integration of Death as narrator. Too many people see death as this scary thing that appears to kill people and I think this representation of Death, will not change people, it will defiantly give an insight into thinking around the fear many people have.
Before I continue praising this book, I'll try to not force any more compliments down your throats and propose a recommendation of a wonderful book that you should read!
