- How does a book cause you to grieve?
I NEVER would have choosen this book, but the amazing reviews proved too strong a lure. This, I'm shocked to say with such honesty, is the best book I have read in my life! I was so moved that I actually felt like I had, very briefly, stepped through the door to actual mourning. The writing is beautiful, factual, utterly intriguing, and the characters so alive they have a hold on you like a ravenous dog with a juicy bone! The book is dedicated to the women of Afghanistan; having lived in England my whole life, too young to have experienced WWII and whilst seeing mayhem on the news, its all to distant to relate - Why would I choose this book? I'm thankful I did, I can't explain the many directions it will pull your mind in, read it!

One of the best books i have ever read. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this story and didn't want to put it down. If you are undecided take the plunge and read it you won't regret it !! Thankyou Khaled Hosseini, for the tale of these two heroines and for opening my eyes to the plight of Afganistan.

A joy to read. My heart went out to the main characters but I did not feel that the author was being overly-sentimental in the depictions, making them more credible. A shocking eye-opener grounded in the reality of the characters' plights. I actually went and read Kite Runner after this book as I was so inspired to read more by Hosseini, even though Kite Runner had not previously appealed to me.

I had to finish this book asap. I loved it so much. Could not work at work and could not sleep at night. As a passionate advocate of domestic violence, I could not wait until justice was done. As a person who is searching for love, hope and calmness in this world which is driven by lust, greed, unfair treatments, war and chaos, I waited till the end. And I saw justice being done. Of course, stories are illusions. I write so many as an amateur and hope that my delusion can be real. Khalid did it in his book. All felt like a reality. For few lucky souls, dreams can come true. Love can be found. Wars could be won either within our insides or in the world out there. Good inspiration for those of us, who know pain, lost love, children or hope. I can carry on forever. But in short, I was tickled. Bought `The Kite Runner' in an instant.

A story of the general and personal horrors of war; love and heartache, with a backdrop of religious conflict, genocide, and political turmoil.
The tale is told by two women whose lives become intertwined. The Christ-like Mariam, and the resilient Laila - both matriarchal heroines that make this story so powerful.
A great read with similar themes to Half of a Yellow Sun, and Kite Runner.
