Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Gripping and enjoyable read..
Having read the Kite Runner, an enjoyable read. A Thousand Splendid Suns was far more accomplished, and a pleasure to read and a great second novel. Its story was heart felt, and it pulls on all your emotions, which I didnt think it would.

A must read and well worth it..

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - GRIPPING!
I am a red blooded male and at first when i saw this was a tale of woe for 2 women i thought it would never keep my attention from start to finish. But my how wrong I was. This book is a beautifully written masterpiece which sucks you in and grips your attention right from the off.
It is a real eye opener to those with little knowledge of the troubles of Afghanistan. The book brings your emotions on a rollercoaster. From sadness, anger and frustration at the difficulties these women faced - To, hope, relief and admiration towards their bond and their strength.
An epic tale which will surely pop in to your mind for weeks to come after you have read it.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Most depressing book ever!
I feel bad giving this book a 1 star rating - it's very well written, a beautiful story and an easy, compelling read.

But, as the title suggests, this is the most depressing book ever! For the first 1/3 of the book nothing but sad, depressing, really bad things happen to the main characters. I had to stop reading it just before halfway, as I read for fun, and this just left me feeling really sad before going to bed.

I'm sure the story has a happy ending, but I couldn't face being miserable of an evening for the next week in order to get there. Sorry Mr. Hosseini!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Masterpiece!
I am a converted Khaled Hosseini fan!

This is a beautifully written book that amazed me with the turn of every page. Hosseini has managed to write convincingly from a woman's point of view and depict both the horror in women's everyday life in Afghanistan and the beauty these 2 particular characters found in friendship, combining resiliance and determination to overcome the hurdles that were thrown in their way and how they never gave up hope.

This is the first of Hosseini's books I've read and it most certainly won't be the last.

I found it so difficult to believe that English isn't Hosseini's first language as I read his prose; his imagary is second to none and I would imagine many English-born writers would be jealous of his articulate turn of phrase.

I was interested in exactly how women are treated in Afghanistan and this book is a no-holds-barred depiction of how these women were treated by their families and the malitia that overtook the city and their lives.

I cannot recommend this book enough.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A celebration of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity
As I hadn't read "The Kite Runner" I didn't know what to expect from "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini. Luckily, I didn't read the blurb on the back or I wouldn't even have started. As it was, I was reluctantly pulled into Miriam's world in the fields around her mothers kolba and soon the narrative had gripped me to the point where the book was hard to put down. Forgetting the chapters, I read each of the four parts in full. When part 1 ended, and Laila's story begins on part 2, I was a little bit put-out but by part 3, the stories were cleverly interwoven and I was back on track again. It is difficult to say what made this book such a compelling read. I had no real interest in the subject matter and the author's frequent use of Afghan words in the text was slightly annoying. I suppose it is just good old fashioned story-telling and the seductive draw of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.
