- A Magnificent Read
I have just finished this book, and let me tell you i could not put it down. The book is a work of art and the story in it is a stroke of genius. I am looking forward to Hosseini's next book. A great read and thoroughly recommended.

I really enjoyed the kite runner. This book however I felt was even better. The characters, setting and story are beautifully and believably portrayed. I found the book very moving and thought-provoking on many levels - childhood love and separation, domestic abuse, modern war-raged loss and hardship, strong friendship, tenacious human spirit and ultimately hope. The last few chapters were gripping and the end fitting to the tale. I would recommend this book to anyone, but if you're anything like me, have the Kleenex handy. Thank you Khaled Hosseini.

This is a book that has you pulled in from the very start, beautifully written & the characters are a dream to believe in. I devoured this book & was glad that it lived up to the strong writing from his debut novel `The Kite Runner`.Superb.

What a book, I could not put it down. you have to read, the you know what goes on in that country. All I can say it is a must. Thanks to Richard and Judy saying it was a good that I read this book.

A story of love, friendship, suffering and heartbreak, this could have been depressingly negative. Instead, it's a gripping page-turner, moving, heart-wrenching and, at the last, tentatively hopeful.
Threaded through the stories of two women, Mariam and Laila, are vivid images of physical and emotional hardship as they watch their country, its traditions and its culture slowly and devastatingly blown apart by a seemingly a futile war. Mariam's peaceful but impoverished childhood in the countryside near Herat and, by contrast, Laila's city upbringing in Kabul are shattered in different ways by events beyond their control.
How they cope with the hardship and heartbreak wreaked by the war, how they come together, and how their relationship develops from suspicion and hatred into a close and loving friendship is a gem of modern story-telling. But the novel has so many other strengths. It's an expertly woven portrayal of life in Afghanistan, both before and during the war. The subjugation of women, the brutality cloaked in respectability hidden within the apparent safety of home, and the despair and suffering exacerbated by an absence of welfare benefits, are universal themes, experienced everywhere at some point in history. Others are unique to Afghanistan.
Khaled Hosseini has produced a masterpiece more compelling and convincing than his first novel 'The Kite Runner'. This has to be one of the best novels of 2007. A must read!
