- Closer to god than religion
I've known of these books for a long time, and was looking for a literary present to give to me neice (10 yo). I'm a long time Sci-Fi and Fantasy fan, but what clinched it for me was the 1 star review by Princess (UK). If even a little of what she rants about is true in these books then I suggest all children read it. I'm sick of religious dogma and to be honest all the ranting from religious types. It's only a book. It's fiction - that makes it as valid as your belief.

Phil Pullman knows how to take the reader on a real jounrney of fantasy. From start to end nothing but pure fun and adventure... A must in anyones book collection....Enjoy

If you wonder why you should read this trilogy of books then you need do no more than read the comments of the reviewer who gave it one star.
If there is a hidden message here it is an appeal for all of us to reject dogma and search for more subtle and profound truths than those offered by Christian, Islamic or other fundamentalists and institutions who are blinded by the dictates and unwavering interpretation of their holy books.

...this is the stuff for young minds in the 21st century. I began to read Northern Lights to my son when he was 8. He's now almost 10 and we have enjoyed a couple of luscious years periodically snuggling down together to share gripping installments of all the books of the trilogy. For any parent wondering how to get their son or daughter into books after Horrid Henry, you could do much worse than invest in this wondrous set and share some time reading to your child. My son's interest in reading, his vocabulary, his reading age, his ability to articulate complex arguments and his interest in Big Ideas has escalated hugely over the past couple of years during which "His Dark Materials" has been our companion. This is an extremely enjoyable and sometimes challenging read for adults too, covering some epic themes with all the excitement, emotion and drama needed to keep the pages turning. Buy it, read it, share it, and gain a glimpse into the ideas that will be guiding and influencing the next generation.

Phillip Pullman has a brilliant imagination, he writes with both skill and power, his dark materials are some of the greatest books ever written. These book are fiction, the product of a brilliant mind, which in no way 'lies' or is 'inspired by satan', only someone who is insecure in their beliefs could claim this. Thank you Phillip Pullman for an inspiring and epic read.
