I believe that in order to even enjoy this game,you must first enjoy survival horror games.
This is more like a resident evil than the first and therefor if you do not like resident evil or any survival horror then you will not like this game.
It's very smiliar to the first one in contolls.
You have limited ammo in this game and when you kill a enemy you can get a limited amount of points to use to learn parasite energy attacks.
I actually believe this might be on par with about resident evil 2 or code veronica x in gameplay and cinematic and sound like.

For some very strange reason Parasite Eve 1 wasn't released for PAL so only those serious gamers who imported the US NTSC version will have had the opportunity to play it. What PAL gamers missed was/is one of the most original and cinematic takes on the survival-horror gaming genre made popular by the likes of Alone in The Dark and, of course, Resident Evil and it's sequels.
Parasite Eve blended an involving storyline with a fairly sophisticated and, as far as I'm aware unique, RPG type (but far better than usual) tactical fighting system. This was later used in much greater depth for the peerless Vagrant Story.
Parasite Eve 2 continues the story although still making sense as a stand alone game. It also uses the same presentation style ie. plenty of cinematic cut scenes and decent dialogue (in sub-titles not spoken). But what they have changed is the fighting system to a slightly more simplified version. This seems to be why some fans of the orginal game are a bit harsh in their criticism of Parasite Eve 2.
What they replaced it with is perfectly good real time third person shooting: auto-aim + target shift whilst the parasite energy (magic) attacks are selected in 'frozen time' but delivered in real-time. It makes for exciting fighting. The comparable aiming systems used in PSOne/DC Resident Evil are truly crude in comparison.
Unfortunately where the fighting fails is in exactly the same way as Resident Evil and a host of other games using pre-rendered backgrounds. This means fixed camera angles and that, far too often, the cinematic viewpoint chosen is far from the best for an action packed fight. And, all too familiarly, if you accidentally or deliberately move between screens during the confrontation the controls may reverse with enemies doing you damage often completely out of sight.
If you've played this type of game before you do get used to it but it can get very frustrating when dealing with the more dangerous enemies.
Only other complaint I have is that the analogue stick movement control isn't very user friendly. You're far better off sticking to the reliable old d-pad - this holds true for SO many PSOne games (Tomb Raider 3/4/5 being good examples and even PS2 Silent Hill 2). People forget these games' control systems were often originated before the twin analogue joystick Dualshock was universal. The d-pad control is often much more precise and subtle.
Apart from that I can't think of anything else to say about PE2 which isn't included in the other positive reviews here. Once finished a largely pointless Replay Mode is released but also a Bounty Mode which lets you replay with harder enemies and get a few new items or those you may have missed on your first run.
In conclusion: Parasite Eve 2 is, in my opinion, as good as and in many ways superior to any of the PSOne Resident Evils. But they set the standard and as PE2 is not dramatically better or different enough so I can't rate it any higher. This is why I've given it 3 stars ie. on my scale, above average and well worth playing but it's definitely less original than it's own predecessor and still contains those all too familiar flaws and cliches.

All of the people that have reviewed this game and have gave it 5 stars obviously havent played Parasite eve 1, the sequel i must say is absolutly boring and DRY i only gave it 1 star because it is continuing from the prequel parasite eve 1 and has the story behind the michondria. When i bought this game i was seriously hyped up, i took it home and played on it, the begging i must say was RUBBISH. Lord help me when i got to the desert stage, i had never in my entire life been so dissapointed in a game. It was a whole different story when i first played on parasite eve 1 the game was more gripped on the mitchondria and eve. Seeing eves many transformations and the story behind her was just absolutly amazing it gripped me in every way possible. the opening sequence was truly spectacular seeing multiple people die in blazing flames falling to the floor helplessly this was created by eve and her mitchondria cell. Parasite eve 1 was perfect in every way. Most of the time while i was playing this trash PE2 i wondored what the hell am i doing wasting me precious game time on this junk, when i could be playing RESI 1 2 they are true horror games.

Overall parasite eve 2 was a let down not only in gameplay but in sound effects and others i am not even going to bother mentioning. it was a sad excuse of a game.
If you want to buy a descent game i suggest you dump this TRASH and buy PE1.
I hope i did you people a favour by not wasting you money on this so called game.

This Game Is Quite Good Creepy And keeps you on the ege of the seat but moving around is slow and reloading bullets to your weapon take a bit of time and when you do that the enemis have time to get closer to you all in all i like the game in my own way

This game does Squaresoft justice as they use an original story and is a totally different to the Final Fantasy Series of games. I wish SquareEnix would make a sequal or a remake of this engrossing and spectacular piece of video gaming genious.
