- The Matrix + End of Days = Fear Effect
Cross The Matrix with end of days and you'll get Fear Effect, in my mind one of the greatest games for the playstation to date. Starting out in Futuristic Tokyo you take the roles of Hana, Glas and Deek three money hungry mercenaries on the trial of Wee Ming runaway daughter of Mr Lam, Chinas most powerful Triad Leader. After a life and death infiltration mission inside Mr Lams compound our heroes find themselves on a mission of survival that will take them from here to eternity as the mystery of Mr Lams wealth and Wee Mings hidden powers slowly unravels. Equipped with a huge arsenal of weapons you will have to battle your way through hordes of Triad Goons, Demon Hook Hands, Damned Souls and (my personal favourite) Zombified Whores. Yes Fear Effect people, if you don't have it BUY IT (especially if you are a fan of the adventure game genre); but be wary, as Glas points out "When this kind of money is involved you tend to loose friends pretty quickly".

Liked Metal Gear Solid?And Resident Evil?Then here is Fear Effect; a blend of both, now with superior visuals and an astonishingly cinematic plot.When your playing the game the detail of the animation in the backdrops in unbelievable and the gameplay is very addictive.You think to yourself as you play, 'Why hasn't this been made into a film?'.Honestly, it's that good.
So what are the negative points of the game?Well unfortunately, it's the bosses.They are very, and I mean VERY hard and will end up with fist-against-the-wall frustration.The biggest shame is that this wonderful game is all over too soon; it can be finished in less than a week and there's nothing you can go back to that makes it worth playing through again.Still worth buying if you have patience though.

The quality of the graphics and the animation has to be seen to be believed. The logic puzzles are challenging and not a barrier to progress provided you pay attention to the game scenery. However ... some of the combat sequences, where you have to defeat a big baddy (or group of baddies) are incredibly difficult to get through. You can be wiped out in a matter of seconds and have to reload and run back from where you saved. And you have to do this again and again and again. After an hour of waiting for reload only to be annihilated again, the game's stunning graphics start to seem less endearing. Buy it if you really like a challenge, but if you're looking for a good old-fashioned shoot-'em-up, look elsewhere.
