Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The best Final Fantasy since Final Fantasy VI (3 US)
In my opinion, the only FF to rival FF6. While FF7 was a great game, with a great storyline and some good character development, there were some things missing in my opinion, some magic that just wasn't there but that you could feel from the first moments in the Caves of Narshe in FF6. FF9 captures all of the Super Nintendo magic that the early Final Fantasies like 4, 5 and 6 (II and III in the US for 4 and 6, the 5th one having only been released in Final Fantasy Chronicles along with FF6 on Playstation) and brings it to you with Playstation graphics and wonderful chibi-like characters which in my opinion just work much better for FF's than realistic-looking characters.

Here, you have a beautiful storyline, with depth, mystery, love, a detailed world that you slowly discover throughout the game, characters that you grow attached to, cities with so much personality like the night town of Treno, the big city of Lindblum with its huge airship docks, the grand castle of Alexandria, the dwarf town of Conde Petie, the Iifa Tree, the world of Terra, there are just so many things about the world of FF9 that are enchanting.. Continuing the trend of badass villains like Sephiroth, Kuja brings an even more human (well... he's not actually human but you get what I mean) feel to the role of nemesis. Here, Squaresoft also end the trend of badass anti-social main characters that Cloud and Squall started. In FF9, Zidane (sadly the name of a French soccer player, but we can live with that) is an outgoing, damsel-in-distress rescuing, woman charmer with a heart of gold, looking out for the better of everyone, and with a great mysterious story to him.

In fact, every character in FF9 has a good background story, and every character has something attaching and interesting to him. I used to hate Steiner, but after a few plays, he turned out to be one of my favorite characters. ... If you can even use the word favorite here, as every character is completely individual both in personality and in battle abilities. Another aspect of FF9 which is great, is the battle strategies that are needed due to the characters all having different abilities. Only Vivi can cast Black Magic spells, only Eiko and Garnet can use white magic and summon, Freya has her dragoon abilities and so on and so forth. (Something that was incredibly lacking in FF7 since the characters are virtually *all* the same, besides their character stats [Cloud having better ones than everybody else since you are virtually forced to have him in the party at all times except the one blessed part of the freaking game where you.. erm.. spoiler, i'll stop there]. Even in FF6 where all the characters could learn all magic spells, they still had different abilities which were their own and made them special.)

FF9 also has an ending reminiscent of FF6 in its length and the feeling of wholeness which it provides when you have gotten through 30-40 hours of gameplay (without all the side quests), unlike FF7's which really left you hanging. Anyway, there is nothing else that I could add without spoiling major aspects of the game, so all I will say is BUY IT! This will be the best investment you ever make if you are a fun of the Final Fantasy series or video game RPG's of the kind. This is really THE BEST Final Fantasy to have come out in years, easily as good as FF6 and perhaps even better on some points! (the Playstation engine kinda helps to add detail that you just couldn't have on a SNES game, the only aspect of FF6 that I would say is clearly superior is its music.. there are just too many good musical themes in that game that you remember years after not playing it.) This is coming from someone who has been a fan of the series since early childhood, and who pre-ordered FF7 4 months before it came out!

Three thumbs up to the Squaresoft crew for this one! (Yes, three!) I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Best Final Fantasy of All, so superd... Buy it NOW!!!!!
The story contains immense depth into characters, history and the whole plotline. The gameplay is complex, yet not hard to grasp. The FMX sequences surpass all those before FFIX, as do the flawless graphics. There are no critisms to such a fantastical game. Even the Sub-Characters are in depth, as well as the enemies. The storyline is of fantasy yet contains life like matters. There is a great amount of freedom, throughout the game, with hidden sub-quests and minigames. There is also a great feature on Chocobos. Beatrix is by far the greatest Final fantasy character of all. The is no reason for why you should not buy this brilliant game. Good luck, the game is chalenging and beautiful.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My favourite! In my opinion the best!
When I saw Final Fantasy IX on the shelves, staring at me, its case twinkling in the lights of the multi-storey floor building, I just HAD to get it. I guarded it to make sure no one else would have it and when it reached my PlayStation console my dreams had come true.

Oh the emotion! Oh the story! Oh the heart wrenching brilliance! Being a fan of Final Fantasy this one, in my oppinion, is the benchmark. Simply wonderful. For its time it had the greatest graphics off all of the Final Fantasies as well as a beautiful musical score and outstanding storyline. The way the game evolves and grows throughout the course of the adventure is truly marvelous. This game, if you put your heart into it and please say you do, will probably take you about 70 hours including ALL of the side quests and mini games.

I have never gotten tired of this game and I have completed it over 5 times. That's about 350 hours of my life gone to one of the greatest experiences I've ever encountered. I truly believe, though Final Fantasy VII is named the greatest RPG of all time, that this is emotionally, lovingly and heart fulfillingly better.

With the upgrowing commotion of Final Fantasy XII this must be played before its memory is forgotten. I believe that you should place your copy of Final Fantasy VII aside for just a little bit to experience the true accomplicity of what Final Fantasy IX has to give.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - In my opinion, nearly as good as FF7!!!
Alot of people say final fantasy 7 is the best, and they probably are correct, but final fantasy 9 almost pushed ff7 of the throne which it has sat on for many years.

I remember i got FF9 the day it came out with my birthday money, played it and loved it, eventually time went by and i lost it. When i got my new copy the other day i was overjoyed to be playing a game i had'nt seen in years.

Seeing it is a PS1 game, the movies and background are astonishing, it has a good storyline, and a very good sbility system, overall it is class. The characters are unique and well written, if you have played any of the other FF games you will love this!

FF = Final Fantasy

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The greatest game EVER!
Final Fantasy IX is a stunning RPG that can be very addictive . It starts off in the airship of Tantalus,a band of thieves. The best thief in Tantalus is called Zidane. Basically, what happens is that the leader of Tantalus,Baku, stages a play to distract the Queen (Garnet's mother) while Zidane kidnaps Princess Garnet. Garnet actually wants to be kidnapped! The mission is a success until one of the queen's knights(No this isn't chess ^_^) gets onto the airship with Tantalus! The Queen sees that Garnet is missing and shoots down the airship and it lands in Evil Forest. This is where the real adventure begins....
The game has stunning graphics for a PSone game(*gasp*it's PS one game!?!)
the sound is amazing and the multiple sidequests gives it max playability. Zidane does swear sometimes, but not as much as Barret from FF*7.
As a final verdict, I say that anyone from about 9- 15 will love this game. If this is your first FF*, you will love it. Longtime FF fans, this one's a classic.

*FF=Final Fantasy
