Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - addictive is an understatment
after buying this game, in the few days of me owning it i can honestly say, quite posibly this is one of the oddest yet addictive fighting games.

i think the ability to unlock new characters only adds to this, making you want to play it more to get them all.

and quite frankly, this game has the funnest credits ive ever seen.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Probably my favourite GC game...
I got this on the day of release (not the Player's Choice one though), and I think it has my highest time for any of my GC games.
If you've played the N64 game, this will be instantly recognisable, and basically the same but improved on in all areas.
If you haven't then it's very simple to get into.
Each character has the same controls for regular attacks- they all use directions with the A button, and you can do A+direction to perform a Smash Attack, which is more powerful and can be held to charge up power. Also each character has special attacks on B which are different depending on the character- eg. Pikachu has electric attacks and Mario has firballs etc. You also get thows, shield and the new ability to dodge. It's all very simple, but surprisingly deep. There are no multi button combo's to remember or anything like that, so beginners stand a better chance.
There are lots of items to make matches a bit more exciting, which you can adjust to your taste. All of them are recognisable to Nintendo fans- fire flowers, red shells, bob-ombs, pokeballs etc.
The arenas are also recognisable with their music- my favourite is Samus' level with the raising lava.
In the game you don't have a health bar, you have a percentage which raises as you get hit, the higher the percent the further you fly when you get hit. If you are hit out of the arena then you are instantly brought back to the arena, and after the time limit the scores are counted.
There are other modes to play, you can have health if you want, or lives, collect the most coins, style points etc.
The game can be played with up to 4 players on screen (more cpu characters on certain modes), or even a tournament for up to 64, but single player is surprisingly complete. There are several modes to play- the main game is a battle through levels to the final boss, or there is an adventure mode with 2d style platform levels. There is still the break the target mode where there are targets you have to destroy in an arena and you have to work out how to destroy all of them, and a sandbag game where you have to hit the sandbag as far as possible. There are other modes too, and also ones you can unlock.
The game has lots of secrets to unlock, modes, levels, characters, also there are nearly 300 trophies to find- these can be found in levels or earned for doing specific tasks. They are like figurines of Nintendo characters that you can read about and look at in detail.
There is a lot of extra detail to the game too- you get awards after a fight for your style, which add to your points, but also there are extra things that you wouldn't get naturally like using only Mario items for example. There are lots of stats that save, like favourite character etc. And you can even name your character so you can see it when you are playing.
This is my favourite game on GameCube and I reccommend it to anyone who enjoys Nintendo's games, as there is something for everyone here, and it is surprisingly tough.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - SUPER Smash Bros. Melee
I actually saw Super Smash Bros. after I saw Super Smash Bros. Melee, but this kind of game is a gem. I've never seen a game with this kind of Gameplay, this game is exellent.

There were 12 characters in the N64 game, but the GC game has just over twice that many, with 25 characters. A lot more stages and more 1P Gameplay compared to the N64 version. I think there are 26 stages to unlock. All with quite tough requirements needed to unlock each one (Well not quite all). But the real challenge lies in the Event Mode. 51 events each with specific requirements, this part of the game is a big challenge, and this game has one of the Cruelest challenges in game history. The Multi-Man Melee Allows varying difficulty, but the Cruel melee is one of the Toughest challenges set in a game. Luckily it is not a must-do option to unlock anything. But any of you that like Nintendo, this is a MUST.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Super Smash Brothers Melee
The N64 game was great but this one is the one that's going to be remembered! It's a dream game really because it has all of your favourite Nintendo stars coming together to beat the living daylights out of each other! You can play as Link, Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Kirby, Pikachu, Fox, Donkey Kong and many more! If you love Nintendo, buy this!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I hate multiplayer fighting games!
I've hated multiplayer fighting games since I was a young kid in the early 80s and watching people playing them down my local arcade.
I'm 35 and my son bought this for his gamecube as he loved the N64 version, which I didn't like either!
Now I am addicted and Kirby is all mine (so leave him alone!)
I love the music, the colourful, clear, bold graphics and the amount of fun that can be packed into one game.
I have no idea what the guy that said he only got 10 minutes enjoyment was playing because there is no way anyone that really tried this game could give it one star!
One player is ok but with 2/3 and especially 4 players the game really comes alive.
It's very fast moving and sometimes confusing there is so much action going on but I found this just adds to the entertainment.
Even at 35 I find myself shouting out the name of a pokemon that suddenly appears and laughing as one of the characters is catapulted towards the camera and then hits the screen.
with so many bonus rounds, objectives and trophies to collect it should keep players entertained for months (there are 300 trophies and so far we have 297....Crazy Hand/Giga Bowser and Mew are too difficult for us unfortunately!)
It may be seen as violent but I would call it fun violence rather like Tom and Jerry.
If I had to recommend one game on the Gamecube to keep children from 7 onwards to teens all entertained, (yes I know it's an 11+) especially if there is more than one child in the family it would be this game!
One of my 10 favorite games of the last 28 years of game playing...and that's coming from someone that hates fighting games!!
