Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An endless game of pure excitement
Wow I love this game.

The number one reason for getting a gamecube was for this game. A huge ammount of characters with plenty of levels based on nintendo a huge ammount of variety from the side scrolling mushroom kingdom levels in Adventure mode to the Hyrule rumble and such in event mode and the ever competetive target and home run modes.

This is perfect for all nintendo fans and to those who don't even like nintento, it has an addictive game style that can be a skill demanding experience or an overlord style of dominance.

Characters include:
Mario
Dr Mario
Luigi
Peach
Bowser
Yoshi
Capt. Falcon
Gannondorf
Fox
Falco
Ness
Ice Climbers
Pichu
Pikachu
Jigglypuff
Mewtwo
Kirby
Roy
Marth
Link
Young Link
Zelda
Sheik

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Bish-bash-bosh - Nintendo style
SSBM originally appeared back on the N64 (as Super Smash Brothers) just before the turn of the century and it was a mighty fine game. Not only because it gave players the chance to beat the daylights out of Princess Peach or lamp Luigi with a baseball bat, but because it actually was a beat-em-up with a difference. A jaw dropping, staying open and dribbling out of the side of the mouth sort of difference. An original beat-em-up you say? Surely this defies the gaming laws of concept or something. It's like having a platform game without the jumping on floating-in-mid-air platform bit.

Although it reverted back to two-dimensions and had a limited number of attack moves for each character, the idea of not only having to beat up your opponents but additionally knock them off screen to finish them off was quite novel. Now throw in a myriad of weapons, some of which give you ultimate fear status (because they're of the instant kill variety), a massive number of environments which actually affect gameplay, a host of options and, crucially, four-player action and you have a spiffing game here.

It often didn't make much sense, the screen was a carnage of colour and mayhem, but it was a lot of fun. Now, in the age of the über-console we find its beefy brother.

SSBM almost exclusively borrows off the original. This kinda creates a difficult situation in that it's still an original game to play but almost too similar to its original. It still runs at breakneck speed, is still impossibly fast to follow and still brings a smile to your face through its pure capacity to entertain. But if you've a veteran of the original what is here to attract your attention?

Well there is a much improved single player game, which although still lacking is essential to the enjoyment of the game. SSBM tries to adopt a Soul Calibur line of mission based games for the single player adventure mode. There are homages to Super Mario, the Legend of Zelda and Metriod in platform jumping-esque type levels and once you complete these, you'll go onto a more conventional battle with some of the characters with some special rules - such as three-on-one or an invisible enemy. If we're being fair, it's nice to see something different being done but it's still poor stuff and you won't be playing on it for any longer than you have to. So why is it so important to do the single player adventure? Because of the rewards of course.

Completing the game with each of the characters gives you secret characters, boosting the initial tally of characters from 14 to an impressive 25 (including characters such as Roy from the Fire Emblem series and Mr. Game and Watch who is, quite frankly, ace). There's also new levels, options and trophies to be won too. The trophies add a real Pokemon element to the game as there are about 300 trophies to collect and the process of doing it does become quite addictive. This will keep you busy for ages. Mini-games such as target practice and home-run baseball derby add even more to the package too.

Add all this to the fantastic multiplayer action that you'll always find in beat-em-ups, and a pretty enjoyable AI opposition to hack away at when you're home alone, and SSMB has its moments. Now all we need to do is calculate the Nintendo factor.

There's virtually every Nintendo series represented here in some way. Obviously Nintendo's A-list take precedence with several levels and many characters representing their case, but time has been made for a number of niches. F-Zero, Ice Climbers, Kirby and Duck Hunt themes all make an appearance as well as many others. The musical-score is truly magnificent too. Each 'blip-blop' Nes tune has received the full orchestral sp and the music on the whole is first rate.

The developers have obviously seen the potential of Nintendo's epic gaming history here and have put a lot of attention and effort into making SSMB a kind of interactive epitaph of the company's gaming exploits.

Essentially SSBM is SSB with Gamecube clothing and a lot of extra options. The physical gameplay is virtually unchanged which is a little unforgivable. However, I never had the original, so I enjoyed this as a first time experience of the franchise in a prolonged, single player fashion and it's great. It's one of the best Gamecube games out and you can't help but like it through its sheer energy and passion to be a videogame.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A must- buy gamecube game
This is one of the best gamecube games ever. All your tame little nintendo characters fight; this game is totally addictive.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A GAME NEVER TO GET BORED OF!!!
No matter if your playing by yourself, or your mates, you will always be guaranteed to have fun playing Super Smash Bros. With ultimate classical nintendo characters like Link, Ganondorf, Mario and Bowser, you can always have a favourite one to choose. With on-going stats that are updated eveytime you play a match, along with special modes like giant mode, slo-mo, tiny, and many other modes which effect your characters' peformances, it is the the ultimate beat-'em-up multiplayer game. There are also 1-player missions and you can even enter in a tournament. I own the game and have never got bored of playing it!
