Rating:
- fabulousas a teenager this is one of the best games i have ever played, except HALO 2 WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IF U STILL HAVENT PLAYED IT. any way halo is an intense fps all the way through there is barely 1 minute in between different battles and the story line is the best for a game ive seen. this game rocks!!! :) Rating: - Halo, Gets Old Fast... Evolution sure has moved on...hasn't it?Okay, Halo is old now, in game terms it's ancient. So some criticisms maybe unfair. In 'looks' it still holds up well, after just finishing Half Life 2 before playing this, it's a hard game to follow. Halo shows it's heritage as a successor to the Marathon games, obviously the graphics aren't as 'spritely' anymore, but it still felt similar to me, perhaps it's all those space ship corridors... There is the major fault of Halo... Space ship corridors, space marines and plasma rifles...It's so...'unevolved'... Once "Aliens" did Space Marines, the concept should have been put to rest, but no, it's all the tedious tropes of sci-fi and videogames... Master Chief is faceless, like Judge Dredd or the Doom protagonist, another tired cliche, under the mask it's our face isn't it? Yes,yes.... Cortana the Ships AI? Done better a hundred times over, made me think of the late night scheduled TV show Andromeda (think "Star Trek Evolved"). So Halo offers nothing too threatening to gamers, it's still a FPS, nothing more, another corridor shooter, following the main conventions of shooters with a few new twists. The shields that regenerate and only a two gun inventory, was it really Halo that came up with those ideas first? The graphics must have seemed great on a £300 brand new Xbox, but on a £50 2nd hand Xbox, a good few years later, it doesn't dazzle enough for 5 stars. Edge gave this 10/10, everyone thought it another perfect game. In hindsight...what about the Library section, a chore at best; then after such a repetitive section, what did they follow it with? The stage before repeated backwards! They reuse the old level! They reuse a lot of samey old corridor scenery, all that purple and pink, over and over; it's certainly a consistent direction... And Halo gets very repetitive, so much they even had to put arrows on the floor, to remind you where to go, as everything looks the same it can feel disorientating. That's not very evolved, is it? The levels lack any ingenuity, there's little cunning about it's design; unless you count the out-dated sudden death falls (unnecessary cliffs and holes dotted throughout the game). I thought we got tired of those traps with Tomb Raider, why have them in a FPS? The infamous introduction of vehicles to FPS (again, did Halo really come up with that idea...) The Wathog, for all the love Machinima makers pour on it, is perhaps one of the worst vehicles in a game. It's a Military version of "Tokyo Drift", Fast and Flippy. I hated it. You feel like you're driving that blue arrow around, not the vehicle, no real Military vehicle would have such ropey control, let alone a futuristic one. A glorified beach buggy. The Ghost is far superior, but it makes you a Rocket Launcher target, the Banshee being the best vehicle in the game. The warthog rears it's ugly mug right at the end of the game in a truly tedious time trial section, a two part time trial, if you fudge it, you have to repeat it all again and again. So learn early how to master that warthog... I must look at a thesaurus to find more words for tedious... The save system is ropey too, no quick save, just checkpoints, but be warned... Save and Quit! SAVE AND QUIT! Turn that machine off at a checkpoint, and all the progress will disappear... When you start a new level, often you'll lose the weapons/ammo you've collected and replaced with ones the designers expect you to use, it's no big issue, just annoying... Is it hard? Well, yes, it's not easy, Legendary levels are impossible and for masochists. There is an easy choice too, so it's fairly open depending on your ability, due to level design, you'll be left scratching your head sometimes (not in a good "this is clever" way). You will often find yourself blundering into a death trap: No one around, drop onto a platform-POP!- a sudden spawning of enemies, you get stuck on a corner and die. Usually this happens just after a checkpoint, so you get an easy chance to redo that segment with hindsight. You need this retry six sense to get though some sudden encounters. What is the multiplayer like? I dunno, never did it, but how many FPS do you need to play? Same old, same old, I can't see Halo being all that different to any other really. Frankly I find the whole 'clan' thing rather...tedious... Fake macho for nerds, I mean...grow a set why don't you? The enemy design? A little so what, not special, except the idea of grunts. I felt guilty about shooting them, once they lose their leader, they shriek and run away in fear, poor things, NSPCA? NSPCG. I felt more affection for them that the space marines (overrated, their chatter doesn't make you care much for them, you don't spend much of the game with them anyway and, unlike Half-Life 2, they don't get in the way... you can shoot right through them...) The grunt really stands out as a clever addition to memorable enemies, even if he's easy to beat. The worst design comes latter with the Flood... I mean really...It gets ridiculous when the enemy is a balloon with a tramp beard...Yes... a bearded balloon that pops when you slap it. Yes...the scourge of the galaxy are helium balloons with tramp beards. Was this suppossed to be intentionallly funny? After the hyped up cutscene...in rush.. BALLOONS! ARG! WITH BEARDS! ARG! Seriously! Weapons, the make or break of a FPS obviously. The guns are okay. I found the sniper rifle and rocket launcher uninspiring and little used. The needler gun was absolutely useless. The (yawn) plasma rifle and pistol do work well, but cannot be recharged. The assault rifle is standard, the shotgun seemed overly strong and it's these two weapons you'll use most. Okay the weapons are dull, but surprisingly the best weapon I felt were the hand-grenades- usually my least favourite of all. One good design of Halo made grenades actually useful, I particularly liked the sticky grenades (If only Tom Hanks had them when Saving Private Ryan). After the (again overrated) level The Silent Cartographer, thing slide downhill, and if you find yourself not finishing, don't worry you won't miss much. If you find FPS dogfights hard, it can drag out, but in general it's not a long game, so no wonder they dragged out The Library Level so much! There's too much filler in this game to be remarkable. Do we need filler to make a game go on for hours and hours? Zelda Wind Waker is almost ruined by excessive sea voyages (filler because they couldn't finish it on time and had to drop a dungeon?) games are expensive, but does that mean quantity over quality all the time? Come on, how many games do people actually finish, before boredom or a deliberately awkward level design halts progress? Bordom and The Library level will finish most Halo players I expect. This game feels a little rushed to make it as a Xbox launch game. I've dissed Clans (sorry), but lastly I can recommend www.xboxttawa.ca (Fire Team Charlie) attempts at Machinima- making movies from gameplay, it's rough and purile and not high art, but it will make you laugh sometimes...mostly at how funny Canadian accents are, but there are some good scenes, well thought out. The later episodes with the 2D army and Moogle are particularly good. But boy, is there some bad Machinima out there! I hope Moogle makes an appearance in Halo 3, Master Chief with a Canadian accent (what's that all aboot?) So, if you love FPS, you'll enjoy this lots. If you don't love them, this is a so so purchase. Half-Life 2 or Deus Ex 2 are far better choices, leave Halo to last on the list. I can't see why people got so excited by Halo. I understand people loving GTA, Final Fantasy, Burnout, Half Life franchises, but Halo left me rather cold. It does have it's moments, but they are few and far between and hardly that memorable. Will you sign my "Save The Grunts" Petition? Grunts and grenades, the things Halo does best... Rating: - Halo Halo is not as good as everyone says it is. To star with, the scenery in missions is sooooooooo repetetive! I actually had a mental map of the place after one mission and the worst thing was, it wasn't meant to be the same place. Yes, the game has creativity with all the different weapons and the storyline and the graphics aren't bad, but it is no better than any other game. Infact, i enjoyed Starwars Republic Commander more than this game. I think it is a waste of money bought new; buy it preowned or not at all. Rating: - Halo, one of the most boring fps I've ever playedI'm utterly shocked at the good reviews this game is getting. Some people are claiming that the game is actually innovative (lol) and the graphics, gameplay, AI, story, etc are good (lol). Someone please explain where the innovation is? You go from point A to point B, and shoot everything you meet. THAT'S THE ENTIRE GAME! The levels on the ships are so lazily designed and dull, with every corridor looking like every other corridor, that most of the time you've no idea where you are or where you're going, and most of the time you don't care - and these tedious levels go on and on and on... Admitedly Halo is a few years old now but that's really no excuse for it's poverty of ambition and sheer lack of anything resembling interesting gameplay. There are many games that came out before it that are far better. Avoid this game unless mindless shooters is your thing, and if it is your thing, at least try something like Serious Sam, which doesn't take itself seriously. Rating: - Halo SuxWell i was told it was a good game lol is it heck i found it boring and the computer players non-effective at all i wont be buying halo 2 either i think il stick with medal of honor and half life 2 |
