Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Top fun for those who remember the original !
If you're of a certain age, you might remember hoarding your change all week so that you could go and meet your mates for a protracted Saturday game of Gauntlet.

Gauntlet was an entertaining, lightweight RPG based on hack and slash, and only really worked as a multiplayer game - whilst the game itself was about slaying monsters, getting powerups and collecting treasure, half the fun was from bickering with the other players about who ate all the food and who shot the potion, whilst stealing everything you could get your hands on.

Gauntlet : Dark Legacy will be instantly familiar to those who've played the original & has much the same game mechanics - it's a multiplayer thrash fest that will have you ostensibly co-operating as a team whilst secretly trying to beat everyone else to the next treasure or powerup. The "remixed" version is in 3D, with a nice game engine and a good mix of characters that can be played.

Rather than the original's simple goal of reaching the next level before you ran out of 10p's , Dark Legacy has a plot that involves exploring numerous themed levels, collecting pieces of special items that allow you to progress. At the end of each themed level, there's an appropriately tough boss that'll try and stop you getting any further.

Gameplay is simple, as in the original - you can battle creatures hand-to-hand or shoot them from a distance. Depending on your initial choice of character class, your character will have different strengths and weaknesses. The wizard is strong in magic, but a poor battler and lightly armoured, whilst the warrior is tough, likes to get in close and have a go - you get the idea. As you progress, you gain levels of experience which make your character stronger, and you can collect treasure to allow you to buy extra powerups.

The levels are pretty progressive, usually involving collecting keys, pulling switches and beating mini-bosses - along the way you'll collect powerups which will give you temporary special weaponry. The game has kept the flavour of the original, with monsters emanating from generators which must be destroyed to prevent them respawning. You won't get far into the game without collecting special items along the way, which encourages you to explore every nook and cranny.

My missus was also a fan of the original, and we had good fun over the couple of weeks it took us to finish the game. Negatives were a slightly awkward control system for powerups, which sometimes seemed to "forget" what you had, and a clumsy interface between levels that took a little while to get everyone saved. Otherwise, it's a very nice take on a classic game that'll no doubt spawn (and ruin) friendships over some mutiplayer mayhem. It's not overly complex, and I didn't really feel like playing it again once I'd finished it, but at the same time it's nicely light and fun to play.

If you haven't played the original arcade games, you might not "get" this game at first. It's not a complex RPG, and it's not a compex beat-em-up. It's somewhere in between, and total enjoyment probably needs a few mates and some beer involved.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Friend or Foe ?
After reading so much mixed press, Good and Bad about this game, I ...took the plunge. I had so many fond memories of playing this game during the mid eighties, and longed to delve back into a Hack n'd Slash festival. Well I couldn't of been more surprised or delighted. A return to the eighties Gauntlet feel of Hack, Slash, Eat, Plunder, Steal, Magic, Power Up Weapons not to mention level apon level of being knee deep in Ghouls, Ghosts, Dragons and everything else that dwells in the underworld. The game flows as smooth as silk with no noticeable slowdown. The camera angles seem natural, rising high above the battlefield if you and a patner should split up as to keep you both in the picture. I accept that it doesn't compare in graphics to say Resident Evil (Gamecube). But hay, if your counting polygons and framerates you've missed the whole point. The game looks great, sounds great and most of all plays great. It delivers exactly what it's supposed to, " A fun hack n'd slash adventure ". For those who can remember the eighties Gauntlet, go and buy this game, and for those who can't remember, buy it and suprise yourself. 10 out of 10.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Best Game and way under rated
This game has been hounded by many reviewers for no real reason. But Gauntlet delivers exactly what it is supposed to: A hack-and-slash adventure with some new good improvements. This is mainly a multiplayer game, but I can tell you that I played it for hours in singleplayer mode and have had a great time. I have two single player games going right now, one with the Warrior and one with a Falconess (secret character). I also have two multiplayer games going with my brother, and we are having a blast. The game requires hours of fighting your way through levels, collecting treasure and items, hitting switches, and raising your experience level (which is highly addictive, by the way). If you are looking for a game with revolutionary gameplay and graphics, then this is not up your alley. But if you simply want a game to sit down and enjoy either by yourself or with a friend, then Gauntlet: Dark Legacy definitely delivers.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Why was this game allowed to be made?
Gauntlet Dark Legacy is probably the worst game for any next gen console. Single player mode makes you want to cry with a clustered screen of figures which dont even mean a thing. You will end up turning your computer off within 1 minute of frustration! It is such a bad game and even though there is a multi player for upto 4 players, the fun will last 30 seconds if your lucky. The graphics are rushed, slow and not pretty. The sound is just bleeps and muffled voices talking about happy days! The gameplay is shallow and dosnt even scratch the surface of the Gamecube's power. You will get very bored and you will be dissapointed with what you have bought.
